Seeing Claire thriving, Scarlett felt genuinely happy for her.
Before long, Claire returned to Scarlett's side.
As she sat down, she handed her trophy over to Scarlett and leaned in closer. "There's a cocktail reception afterward. Do you want to go?"
Scarlett didn't refuse immediately. Instead, she asked, "How about you? Do you feel like going?"
Claire shook her head with a light chuckle. "You know I've never been much for those kinds of events."
Hearing that, Scarlett suggested, "Should we just head home, then?"
But Claire smiled and declined. "Let's not go back just yet. I'll take you out for a little stroll instead."
Scarlett didn't object. She nodded softly. "Alright."
The venue was buzzing with energy, but to Scarlett, none of that liveliness felt like it belonged to her. Sitting amid the crowd and noise, she couldn't help but feel uneasy, as if something were pressing uncomfortably against her.
Once Scarlett agreed, Claire rose without hesitation. Gently pushing the wheelchair, she murmured, "Let's go then."
As she guided the chair forward, she offered polite apologies to those in their path. "Excuse us, sorry, coming through."
Claire wheeled Scarlett all the way down the aisle and toward a rear exit.
From where Vincent was seated, he had overheard Scarlett and Claire's exchange and knew they were leaving.
Sabrina glanced toward Vincent and noticed his gaze fixed in the direction the two had gone. Her heart tightened, squeezed by an invisible grip.
Even through the ache, Sabrina reached for Vincent's arm and whispered, "Vincent, what are you looking at?"
Vincent turned his eyes away. When he looked down at Sabrina, he vaguely registered her chest pressed against his sleeve—the soft curve unmistakable against his arm.
In that instant, he pulled his arm back sharply.
Feeling his withdrawal, Sabrina immediately let go.
Seeing how pale he looked, she asked worriedly, "Vincent, did I hurt you?"
He shook his head, his tone cool. "No."
Sabrina could sense the distance in his manner but still asked quietly, "The cocktail reception is about to begin. Shall we go?"
Vincent showed no interest. "You go ahead," he replied. "There's something I need to take care of. I'm heading home."
When Sabrina realized he didn't want to stay, she insisted, "Then I won't go either."
