Sam looked at her but still said nothing. His chest felt strangely tight.

"What if I never agree?" Sam suddenly asked.

She let him go and stepped back, choosing actions instead of words. The second her warmth slipped out of his arms, Sam felt something hollow drop in his chest.

Seeing her face, sad but serious, made his heart jolt in panic. He called her name before he even realized it. "Madison."

She looked up, her eyes misty. "Yeah?"

He froze, suddenly unsure what to say. After a few seconds of silence, he finally said, "Do you know why I didn't agree?"

She tensed. "Why?"

"Because you changed too suddenly, too abruptly."

Even now, when he replayed the past two weeks in his head, it still didn't feel real.

"Two weeks ago, you were threatening to die just so you could marry Johnny. But from then on, you suddenly said you wouldn't marry him, and you even started getting close to me."

His gaze dropped to her. "But do you remember how you used to treat me?"
