Begging for a Second Chance (Sienna Sloan and Jarred Sterling) novel Chapter 145

Seeing her wake up, a glimmer of light sparked in Jarred's eyes.

"You're awake?"

He leaned forward, grabbed a thermos from the nightstand, and twisted the lid off. The comforting aroma of hot broth drifted through the air.

"Are you hungry?" He scooped a spoonful, blew on it gently, and brought it to her lips. "Have some soup first. The doctor said you shouldn't eat anything too heavy right after waking up..."

Sienna turned her face away.

She refused to even look at him, cutting straight to the chase. "The doctor should have told you everything by now. I'm not pregnant. Let me know when you're free, and we'll go finalize the divorce."

Jarred's hand paused, the tender smile freezing on his face.

A second later, as if he hadn't heard a word she said, he slowly placed the lid back on the thermos, twisted it tight, and set it down.

"If you don't feel like eating, how about some music?"

His voice was as gentle as someone trying to coax a wounded, defensive cat.

He pointed to a small, brand-new Bluetooth speaker on the nightstand.

Lowering his voice, he added, "The doctor said soothing music helps with the recovery process."

He reached out to press the power button.

In that instant, Sienna's patience completely ran out.

She swatted his hand away, sending the speaker crashing violently onto the floor.

She stared at him, her eyes red. "Jarred, stop playing dumb. I know the doctor told you. It's not just that I'm not pregnant this time. It's that I will never, ever be able to have a child for the rest of my life."

Jarred stared down at the speaker rolling away into the corner. When he looked back up, whatever fragile gentleness and hurt he had been faking instantly froze over.

It was replaced by a dark, suffocating storm of fury that refused to be contained.

Sienna held his gaze. "If you're still planning on using my womb for whatever scheme you have cooking, I suggest you drop it right now. There is no other outcome for us but divorce."

Even knowing they might beat you half to death, you still sent that text. You didn't even care about your own life—you just wanted to lure them here!

You let yourself get battered and broken just to get away from me? Just for a divorce?!"

Sienna's lips parted slightly. "Exactly."

A monstrous rage choked him, but the moment his gaze caught her clear, icy expression, the explosive fury was ruthlessly snuffed out.

He forcefully tore his eyes away, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed down the violent impulse on the tip of his tongue.

The anger burned like acid in his gut, a tangled mess of emotions suffocating him.

But he couldn't bear to hurt a single hair on her head. He couldn't even bring himself to raise his voice.

He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, the frantic craze had been buried under layers of dark restraint, leaving only bloodshot exhaustion.

He let out a heavy, ragged breath, his voice hoarse. "Fine. Have it your way."
