Betrayed by Blood: My Second Life as a Queen novel Chapter 139

Beatrice quickly replied: [I knew you'd be reasonable, Caspian. I really didn't want to force your hand like this, but I had no other choice. You know I only have one son, and he's so taken with Tessa. This was the only way I could think of to salvage her reputation. You don't blame me, do you?]

With trembling fingers, Caspian slowly typed out: [I understand.]

After hitting send, he immediately turned off his phone, completely ignoring the subsequent flurry of messages Beatrice fired off.

Caspian was undeniably on the verge of a breakdown. He took several deep breaths to force his raging emotions into check.

Then he turned his head to look at Vivienne, speaking softly. "I'm sorry. I've probably been a massive disappointment to you lately."

Hearing him say that made Vivienne's chest ache. She couldn't help but march over and pinch his cheek. "What nonsense are you spewing? You are the victim here! Why are you blaming yourself? The ones at fault are those malicious, deceitful vultures!"

Vivienne knew Caspian had his flaws, but how could she blame him? He had watched his own parents die right in front of his eyes when he was just a child.

He was carrying deep trauma, and Vivienne understood that entirely.

His desperate need to repay a debt was nothing more than a tragic attempt to cling to the final scrap of warmth left in his life.

Vivienne would never blame him; she only felt an overwhelming sense of heartbreak for him.

She sighed, then gently patted his head. "Don't be afraid. We'll both be there with you tomorrow. You go out there and expose those bloodsuckers. I will be your impenetrable shield!"

As she spoke, she thumped her chest, but hit a little too hard and ended up coughing. Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she whipped out her phone. "Oh, right! I'm going to have my dad rally as many reporters as possible. We are making sure this becomes front-page news everywhere!"

With that, she hurried off to make the calls. Caspian watched her go, a genuine sliver of warmth lighting up his eyes.

He then turned to Willow, his voice soft. "Willow, thank you for everything you've done. If you don't mind, would you call me your maestro from now on?"
