In her previous life, when Willow heard the news of his death, it hadn't felt real. But in this life, she finally knew just how much pain he had endured.
How despairing must he have been before he died?
Willow took a deep breath and squeezed his hand back.
Her slender fingers slipped through his, interlocking them tightly.
Lucian's eyelashes fluttered. He looked down, his heartbeat instantly losing its rhythm.
"Willow..." He opened his mouth to call her name, but his vocal cords failed him. The sound he made was as soft as a mosquito's buzz, so quiet he couldn't even hear it himself.
Yet, Willow heard it.
She turned her head and smiled at him, holding his hand even tighter. "Lucian, this place is too filthy. It's not good enough for you. Let's go."
His throat tightened, his thoughts completely chaotic.
His eyes were solely focused on their tightly clasped hands. He followed her, walking forward step by step.
Just as they were about to leave the banquet hall, Willow suddenly turned around, her gaze falling on Sterling's pathetic figure.
Then, a wicked smile stretched across her lips. "Sterling, I forgot to tell you. The only feeling I have for you is disgust. I will never say yes to you. Starting today, if you keep pestering me, you'll be deliberately trying to steal another man's woman, forcing Lucian to turn against you. The blame will lie entirely on you. According to family rules, you'll be the one to lose your right to inherit."
With that said, she kicked the banquet hall doors open and walked away without ever looking back.
Adelina glanced sideways at Sterling, rolled her eyes completely devoid of elegance, and then turned to chase after Willow.
Sterling remained frozen in place. Phillips quickly rushed over to help him up. "Sterling, please don't be angry. Since she doesn't know what's good for her, we can just find someone else..."
"Shut up."
Phillips was stunned. He couldn't help but look at Sterling. Sterling's eyes were downcast, his thoughts unreadable. The emotions on his face were complex, but strangely, he didn't look angry.
Could he... actually be thinking of giving up his inheritance rights?
Impossible!
Phillips quickly composed himself. From childhood, Sterling's greatest desire was to become the heir. He would never change that just for a woman.
