At the thought, Willow's heart hammered against her ribs, her breath hitching uncontrollably.
She drew a deep breath, forcing her turbulent emotions back down until absolute rationality took over. She eyed Leo warily and asked, "What is your game here?"
It was a simple question devoid of any mocking edge, yet it cut deeper than the cruelest insult.
Leo couldn't stop himself from wondering just how wretched he must have been in the past, for a simple gesture of kindness to be met with such intense suspicion.
A painful lump formed in Leo's throat.
He opened his mouth, struggling to string broken syllables into a coherent sentence. His voice trembled violently. "Willow, I don't have an ulterior motive. I just... I figured you'd want this, so I brought it for you. I tried reaching out so many times over the past few weeks, but you refused to see me. I didn't have any other choice but to do this today."
He was rambling now, and by his final sentence, heavy tears rolled down his cheeks.
Willow felt absolutely zero sympathy for him. She stared at him with chilling composure before letting out an abrupt laugh. "Drop the act, Leo. Do you really think I'm going to fall for this?"
Leo froze in his tracks, forgetting how to breathe. He looked like a stiffened wooden puppet.
A numb sensation crept over his scalp, but he had no idea how to defend himself.
