She knew Officer Harrison wasn't trying to crush her hopes, but rather wanted to keep her from clinging to false optimism. After all, if you don't expect anything, you can't be disappointed.
He was worried Willow wouldn't be able to handle the letdown.
Willow nodded slightly. "I understand. Thank you for your time, Officer Harrison."
Having gotten the information she needed, Willow returned to Lucian's side.
Lucian noticed the faint redness around the corners of her eyes and instantly understood.
He murmured softly, "Willow, the Jagger family is at your service, whenever you need us."
Hearing that, her eyes crinkled in a soft smile. "Being this good to me... aren't you worried I'll get attached and never let you go?"
Lucian's gaze shifted, a profound restraint hidden in his eyes. "Willow, that's exactly what I'm hoping for."
This time, Willow was the one left not knowing how to respond.
In the corner, Xavier stared at her, wanting to ask what had happened, but knowing exactly how much Willow despised him right now, he hesitated for a long time before deciding not to approach.
He had caused her too much pain in this life, damage that could never be undone.
But the least he could do was keep his distance and try not to annoy her.
At least that way, Willow might be a little happier.
While he stood in silence, Leo and Asher arrived. They had already been briefed on the situation on their way over, and as they looked at Willow, their eyes were filled with worry.
Willow didn't even spare them a glance, keeping her head down as she racked her brain for a casual excuse to reply to Lucian.
Before she could speak, the officer in charge of reviewing the evidence for Tessa's case walked out.
Tessa trailed behind him, her face completely drained of color as she awaited her judgment.
The officer's tone was icy. "According to the investigation, the evidence is sound. Furthermore, Tessa's ten accomplices have all confessed. As the mastermind, Tessa is facing immediate sentencing for attempted grievous bodily harm! The accomplices have other pending charges and will face further investigation before their sentences are stacked!"
Tessa's pupils shrank to pinpricks, her mind going entirely blank.
Then, she whipped her head toward Willow. The arrogance that usually resided in her eyes was entirely replaced by desperate pleading. "Willow, I'm begging you, okay? I can't go to prison, it'll ruin my entire life! You didn't even get hurt, so why do you have to push it this far?"
Tessa's fists were clenched white. Every word she forced out felt like a jagged blade slicing through her throat, delivering unimaginable agony.
