Willow rolled her eyes without an ounce of grace, scanning the room. "Where are your clothes? If you don't wash them now, you won't have anything to wear tomorrow."
Lucian chuckled. "Already washed them. Tossed yours in with them, too. They'll be dry soon, don't worry."
Willow muttered to herself. For a man who looked so ruthlessly untamable, he was surprisingly domesticated.
Lucian caught her whisper and arched an eyebrow. Inopportunely, his mind drifted to Julian, who was currently drowning in the storm outside.
*Domesticated? I just held a knife to Julian's throat.*
But he wisely kept that thought to himself.
Willow was genuinely exhausted. She let out a yawn and headed back to her bedroom.
Lucian got up and adjusted the water dispenser to a warm, comfortable temperature, just in case Willow woke up thirsty during the night.
Only after making sure everything was perfect did he finally close his eyes and drift off.
Willow lay in bed. In the past, every stormy night had left her tossing and turning. At her worst, she had to swallow two sleeping pills just to catch a few hours of uneasy rest.
But tonight, perhaps because she knew Lucian was guarding her door, she felt an unprecedented sense of peace.
The heavy rain drumming against the glass sounded less like a nightmare and more like a soothing lullaby.
Before long, Willow drifted into a deep, dreamless sleep.
The next morning, the moment Willow woke up, Evans knocked on the front door.
She groggily walked out of her room, only to find that Lucian had already opened the door. "What is it?"
Evans's voice was laced with urgency. "Ms. Shaw, Julian stood outside in the pouring rain all night long. He's currently unconscious with a dangerously high fever. He's been on an IV drip for three hours, but the fever hasn't broken. He's delirious, begging and screaming to see you. Can you..."
Hearing this, a flash of cold mockery crossed Willow's eyes.
When she was hospitalized with a deadly fever years ago, none of them had bothered to visit her.
Why the double standard? Julian gets a fever, and suddenly the whole world has to revolve around him? But when Willow was fighting for her life, she was entirely expendable?
What kind of twisted logic was that?
Willow cut Evans off, her tone sharp and resolute. "I won't see him. From now on, please don't inform me about anything regarding the Shaw family. I have zero interest in hearing about them."
Evans was momentarily stunned. He didn't know the full, gruesome details of her past with her brothers, only that they had cut ties.
He had assumed their falling out was just a temporary clash of tempers, something that would heal with time.
But seeing the absolute glacial void in Willow's eyes... it felt as though that bridge had been burned to ash forever.
