Watching his devastated expression, Willow curled her lips in a sneer. "Are you really going to play dumb now? Xavier, do you dare tell me you didn't notice how broke I was?"
The question pierced right through him.
He opened his mouth, but all that filled his mind were images of Willow looking utterly destitute.
It was true. She always wore shabby clothes... even washing the same school uniform over and over again.
He had found her embarrassing, constantly mocking her for pretending to be poor.
He had never once considered that she was actually struggling to survive.
In that moment, the anger completely drained out of Xavier. He found it hard to believe. Tessa was always so sweet and obedient—how could she possibly have treated Willow like that?
Was there some misunderstanding? No. When he got back, he would have to interrogate Tessa himself.
Elias was also staring at Willow in a daze. He suddenly remembered how, back in college, Willow was always rushing off, saying she was busy with part-time jobs.
At the time, he hadn't been the least bit understanding. He just found it baffling. After all, the Shaw family might not be the most elite cartel in the world, but they were still a top-tier wealthy family. How could Willow possibly be short on cash?
Back then, Elias had cruelly assumed she was just putting on an act to squeeze more money out of him. Out of sheer stubbornness, he hadn't offered her a single cent of help.
It wasn't until now, hearing the raw grievance from Willow's own mouth, that he finally realized how heartless he had been.
No wonder... No wonder she had refused to see him ever since she gave up her place at the wedding. She must despise him.
Willow observed their varying expressions with cold eyes, the irony in her heart deepening.
She had never hidden her poverty, yet they had intentionally turned a blind eye.
