Chapter 4
He finally nodded. Let me stay.
“Room and board. Hundred a day. Job’s short, though. Month, tops.”
I nodded, happy. That was enough. One month, and Aria would be out. I’d have somewhere to go.
So I worked construction. Twenty-something days.
When my brother found me again, he almost didn’t recognize me.
My hair had grown out, sticking up everywhere. I was covered in dust. Every step, little puffs of it fell off
“What are you doing here? Emilia, do you know how long I’ve been looking for you? Come on. Let’s go
home. You can’t do this kind of work.”
I shook him off. Picked up another stack of bricks. Pretended I didn’t know him.
He pressed his lips together. Stopped trying to persuade me. Went to talk to the foreman instead.
A few minutes later, the foreman came over, face like thunder.
“Emilia. You didn’t mention you did time for theft. Can’t have your kind on this site. You’re done. And don’t bother asking for your pay. Now get the hell out.”
My stomach dropped. I grabbed at anything. “Please. Just give me another chance. I did time for something I didn’t even do. I never stole a thing in my life. I won’t cause any trouble. Just let me stay…”
He cut me off with a sneer. “We don’t hire dishonest people. Out. Now.”
He shoved me. Hard.
I stumbled backward, and Fabio caught me. Steady. Smug.
He pressed a phone into my hand, that self-satisfied smile playing on his lips. “See? You can’t make it out there on your own. The only place you belong is with me. Emilia, we’re blood. Doing things my way, that’s what’s best for you.”
He ruffled my messy hair. Didn’t even care that his hand got covered in dust. Just smiled, grabbed my wrist. “Come on. Let’s go home. Don’t make me have to find you again.”
I stood there. Didn’t move.
He turned back. Frowned.

I looked him dead in the eye. “Fabio. What do I have to do to make you leave me alone?”
“What the hell is wrong with you? I spent over twenty days looking for you. Put the company on hold.
You know how much money I lost?”
He yanked my arm. Hard. “We’re going home.”
He shoved me in the car. Took me back.
On the way, he got a call. Dropped me at the house and rushed to the office. Told Nerina not to let me
leave.
The second he was gone, her face changed.
“He actually brought you back? After everything, he still cares about you?”
I barely held back from punching her. Asked the question I’d been carrying for three years.
“Why did you frame me? What did I ever do to you?”
She laughed. Cold. Nasty. Eyes full of venom.
“You told him not to spend money on me. He already said the company’s yours, not mine. You’ve got a brother this good, and you can’t even stand him spending a little on me? Who the hell do you think you are?”
My hands curled into fists.
“Do you have any idea how he makes that money? He’s not from one of those old Mafia families. Everyone looks down on him. He has to bust his ass just to stay in the game. Those bastards push him around constantly. He’s coughed up blood more than once trying to make deals with the families at the top. And you just, you ask for millions like it’s pocket change.”
“So what? It’s not like he’s making it for me anyway.”
She examined her nails. Completely unconcerned. “If he dies, the company doesn’t go to me. The only way I get anything is if you’re out of the picture.”
I stared at her. A chill ran through me.
All she ever cared about was money,
“You ungrateful little snake.”
I gritted the words out and walked toward my room.
