Chapter 4
At the entrance of the amusement park. Alexander strode straight inside.
He hadn’t even gotten close before the sight stopped him cold-the free-fall ride, once bright blue, was now stained a deep, horrifying red.
The stench of blood still hung thick in the air.
He covered his nose in disgust. “What the hell is that smell? What the hell has Grace done this time?!”
The park manager’s face was drenched in cold sweat. “Sir… maybe you should… see for yourself.”
He stepped aside, revealing two figures covered with white sheets, one large, one heartbreakingly small.
Alexander’s hand hovered between them, hesitating. His brows drew together in a tight frown, uncertainty flickering
across his face.
I clutched my chest, my heart twisting in unbearable pain. I didn’t want to look, yet I couldn’t
At last, he reached for the smaller bundle and lifted the sheet.
A sharp scream pierced the air behind him.
“Alex! Why did you bring a dead stray cat here?!” Lila shrieked, throwing herself into his arms.
The brief trace of panic on his face faltered, then vanished. Realization dawned-dark, cold, cruel. He kicked the tiny
corpse aside as if it were nothing.
Then, with a flick of his wrist, he ordered the handlers to release a few stray dogs. Drawn by the scent of blood, the
animals rushed forward in a frenzy.
I screamed and lunged toward them, but my hands passed through everything.
I clawed at him, bit him, begged him to stop, but no one could see me. I was nothing but a wisp of a soul.
I wept and screamed until my voice tore. What had I done wrong? What had my baby done to deserve this?
As the dogs devoured what little remained. Lila’s eyes flashed with a strange, venomous light.
“Stop putting on that ghost act! Where’s Grace?!”
“Wasn’t making Lila jump once enough? Now she’s using dead animals to scare her! How did I never know she could be
this vicious?”
‘Grace, weren’t you supposed to care about the baby most of all? If you don’t come out now, once the child is born, we’ll get a divorce. You won’t stand a chance for custody. After that, don’t expect to ever see the baby again!”

My parents were long gone.
My husband had betrayed me.
The only thing I had left, my baby, had been killed by his own father and fed to wild dogs until not even bones remained.
