Chapter 3
Just then, Nathan and his father walked through the door.
“What’s going on?!”
Nathan froze for a second, then sprinted to my side.
“She… she just fell!” Sophie stammered, already trying to distance herself.
I was in too much pain to form words, I just grabbed Nathan’s arm.
“The… hospital… the baby…”
Nathan scooped me up in his arms and ran for the garage.
I went through a solid day and night of agonizing labor before the baby finally came.
When they found out it was a son, the entire Hale family was ecstatic.
But the moment I could think clearly, I confronted Nathan about the maternity retreat.
“That baby would still be inside me if she had not attacked me. He is two weeks early because of Sophie.”
“Nathan, I am not coming home with you until your parents are gone.”
He managed to look surprised, but immediately started making excuses for her.
“Honey, she’s just… she’s old, she panics about money. You just gave birth. Please, just rest. I will handle
this.”
I hired a private nurse for the rest of my hospital stay. As expected, Sophie never showed her face.
The day I was discharged, I gave him one last check.
“Are they gone, Nathan? Because I will not walk into that house if she is still in it.”
He flinched. He forced an awkward, placating smile and reached for my hand.
“Ella, come on. Your health is the only thing that matters right now. Do not fixate on this.”
“My parents just want to see their grandson. It is not permanent. I promise, just get through your recovery,
and I will send them home.”
I pulled my hand away.
“See their grandson’? Nathan, are you pretending to forget why I was in the hospital in the first place?”
“Or did you just assume the assault and the twenty-four hours of premature labor just slipped my mind?”
“I told you, get them out, or we get a divorce. I was not bluffing.”

The smile vanished. He sounded completely cornered.
“Alright, alright! I get it. I know you have been through hell.”
“I will take care of it. I said I will take care of it, okay?”
Two days later, I walked through our front door.
His father was sitting on the sofa, legs crossed, reading the paper like he owned the place.
Sophie came bustling out of the kitchen with a plate of fruit, a sickly-sweet, exaggerated smile plastered on
her face.
“Oh, my precious grandbaby is home! Let Grandma see him!”
I instinctively turned, shielding the baby from her reaching hands.
“Why are they still in my house?”
Sophie’s hand froze mid-air. Her face darkened.
“Your house? This is my son’s house. And I will be here as long as I like.”
“Just because you produced a son does not mean you’ve forgotten your place. You do not make the rules
here.”
I slowly lifted my chin, ignoring the raving woman. I locked my eyes onto Nathan.
“This is you ‘handling it?”
His whole expression snapped. He was done placating me.
“Ella Jameson, for God’s sake, are you ever going to let this go?”
“They are my parents! They sold their house back home just to be here, to help with our son! What do you want me to do, throw them out on the street?”
In that second, my heart just sank into a black hole.
What did he mean, sold their house?
He told me they were just coming to see the baby, to visit for a few days.
He never said a single word about them selling their property. So this was the plan all along? They are
moving in?
This was the plan. Move them in, trap me, and then use guilt to keep them here.
His father, silent until now, finally chimed in, his face grim.
“We are old. We sold everything we owned to come here for you. For our grandson.”

“And this is how you treat us? Trying to throw us out? What will people say? What about the Hale family name?”
“Oh, Lord, have mercy!”
Sophie suddenly collapsed onto the floor, slapping her thighs and letting out a theatrical, ear-splitting wail.

“Oh, Lord, have mercy! My daughter-in-law is throwing me out!”
“I worked my fingers to the bone to raise my son, sold everything to come here for this baby.”
“So the city girl looks down on us country folks now? How are we supposed to live with that?”
Her voice was a piercing wail, clearly intended to carry down the hall.
Sure enough, I heard our neighbor’s door creak open, followed by the faint sound of curious whispering.
Nathan’s face flushed with pure embarrassment. He grabbed Sophie, yanking her up from the floor and dragging her back inside.
He turned to me, his voice suddenly low and pleading. “Ella, please. I’m begging you.”
“This is not easy for them, okay? They’re old, they just want to be near their family.”
“Can you just… let it go for now? The neighbors are listening. You’re putting me in an impossible position!”
He dragged his hands down his face, playing the part of the tormented husband.
“The retreat is gone. We cannot find a good maternity nurse this late, and your parents are out of the
country.”
“Just let my mom help. Is that so bad?”
“I promise. Just give it one month. Once the baby is settled, I’ll find them their own place to rent. One month,
Ella. Please?”
He really knew how to play both sides.
I looked down at our son, who was wailing now, startled by the noise. I decided to give him one last chance.
“One day, Nathan. You have one day to find them an apartment.”
I woke in the dark for the nightly feeding and felt it immediately. My son was burning up.
I ran out with the baby to get Nathan, needing him to drive us to the hospital.
But the apartment was empty. Besides me and my son, everyone was gone.
I fumbled with my phone, my voice cracking with panic.
“Nathan, where are you? The baby’s burning up, he has a high fever! You have to come home now!”
The line was silent for two long seconds.
“I’m at the airport.”
“What?!”
