Chapter 7
“Worried about me? What a laugh.
It has been two weeks since my son’s fever.
In that time, his social media was full of smiling family vacation photos, but not one call or text to me.
1 offered him some friendly advice.
Are you lost, Nathan? Your home should be in town. You must’ve come to the wrong house.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I sold the apartment. You need to leave.”
I did not give him time to sputter. I just hung up and turned off my phone.
I did not sleep at all.
The next morning, I was in the nursery with my son when I heard shouting from downstairs.
I went to the balcony. And there they were, outside the front gate. The Hales. They looked… pathetic.
Nathan had a black eye and a split lip.
His father’s glasses were crooked, one eye swollen shut.
But Sophie was the real masterpiece: hair like a rat’s nest, scratches down her face. She was screaming at my parents
“Your daughter is a thief! A criminal!”

“She is lawless! She sold our home right out from under us while we were gone!*
My mother stood inside the gate, her face like stone.
“You watch your mouth. Say one more word against my daughter, and I am calling the police for slander”
‘Go ahead! Call them!”
His father puffed out his chest, completely self-righteous.
“Let the police decide what kind of vicious woman sells the family home behind her husband’s back! Is there any decency left?”
Nathan just hovered behind them, looking mortified. He clearly had not expected my parents to be here.
I handed the baby to Mia and went downstairs.

“Ah, so now you remember your manners? I told you, a wife must be obedient. You are not a princess anymore.”
“But since you know you were wrong… I can be the bigger person and forgive you, if you buy a new apartment-bigger
than Crestview-and put it in my son’s name.”
I put my arm out to stop my actual mother, who looked ready to lunge at her. I looked straight at Sophie.
“I was not talking to you. But it is amazing how you just respond to the word ‘Mom’ like a trained dog.”
Sophie’s face turned a shade of green.
“Yoy! How dare you? I am your husband’s mother! You will respect me!”
I laughed.
“Respect? Did you give birth to me? Did you raise me? Why on earth would I owe you anything?”
“From the second you canceled my maternity retreat… From the second you assaulted me and sent me into early labor..
“From the second you all conspired to abandon me to ‘teach me a lesson, you lost the right to ever be called anything by
