Chapter 3
A bitter smile escaped the corner of my mouth.
Six months earlier, Lila, who had been overseas, had suddenly returned to the country.
Alexander had said she was all alone and, without so much as a call, brought her home to live with us.
At first I hadn’t thought much of it; I even treated the girl with kindness, feeling sorry for someone so young.
Until the night she poured a glass of red wine over her head, then knelt and banged her forehead on the floor begging
me to spare her.
After that, Alexander’s eyes began to change whenever he looked at me.
That day he refused to listen to my explanation; he locked me in the attic and left me hungry for three days, warning
¿ through clenched teeth.
“Grace, you have disappointed me. Lila means more to me than you can imagine. If you keep targeting her, even as my
wife I will make you pay.”
Incidents like that became routine, and his gaze toward me grew colder each time.
I had planned to divorce him after the baby was born.
Then Lila jumped.
And the messages and hateful voice notes blamed for pushing her over the edge were traced back to me.
Those words were vicious enough to ruin a person, but I hadn’t written them.
Alexander refused to believe me.
He was so consumed with pity for Lila that his eyes went red, and he didn’t care about the child inside me: he only
wanted to make his beloved feel justice.
‘Sir… Mrs. Hayes seems to be… perhaps, maybe you should go see for yourself.”
Alexander paused. Then impatience flitted across his face.
‘She’s still acting out after all this time?!”
The amusement park manager hesitated, then said with difficulty, “No, str… it’s more like… she’s not breathing’
Alexander froze, Lila’s hand clutched in his.
A few seconds of silence stretched between them before he smirked as if amused.

“She’s getting bolder about avoiding punishment. Now she’s pretending to be dead to avoid kneeling to Lila?”
Tell her she can die if she wants, but she has to apologize to Lila first, or don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
Cold sweat formed on the manager’s forehead. He wanted to protest, but Alexander’s furious face shut him up.
Lila looked up with an innocent tilt of her head. “Alex, maybe forget it. Even if Grace dislikes me and makes things hard,
she’s still your wife. As long as I can stay by your side, I can bear it.”
Alexander pulled her closer, his voice low and coaxing
“Lila, you don’t need to be afraid of that petty woman. She’s not even worth a single strand of your hair. This time, we’ll
make sure she learns her lesson, so she knows her place from now on.”
“But…”
“Enough.” he interrupted gently, brushing her hair back. Trust me. I know what’s best.”
