Winnie cut him off, every word turning sharp as a blade.

"You were the one who was dead set on marrying me back then. That's what made me stake everything on trusting you. And now that you're unhappy with yourself, now that you can't get past whatever's eating at you, you just decide to get a divorce?

"I'm telling you right now, Michael, even if we end up hating each other for the rest of our lives, I will never make it easy for you to walk away from me!"

Michael had nothing to say.

He understood Winnie's heart, but he understood her temperament even better. As much as she valued their relationship, she valued her pride and her dignity above everything else.

Michael had assumed that even if Winnie held firm, she wouldn't outlast his repeated refusals.

"Winnie..." After a long moment, Michael finally spoke, his voice heavy. "You don't need me anymore, not really. You have Khloe and the others behind you. If you want it, you could divorce me and find someone worth trusting, someone better than me, in no time at all."

Winnie let out a bitter laugh. She turned to leave, but stopped after only two steps.

"I won't agree to a divorce, and I won't sign anything. No matter how badly you want to be rid of me, the law won't let you divorce me right now anyway."

Winnie gritted her teeth and reached for the door handle, but before she could open it, Michael's hand closed over her wrist again.

"What do you mean by that?"

Michael moved fast, reacting almost the instant the words left her mouth.

But Winnie had no intention of answering him directly. "Let go. You don't even want to see me anyway, so why stop me?"

"Not until you explain yourself."

Michael's throat worked. He finally stopped avoiding Winnie's gaze and instead stared straight into her eyes without blinking, as if trying to dig something out of her.

Winnie ignored him and tried to pry his hand off by force. Michael wasn't interested in wrestling with her; he simply pulled her by the shoulders and turned her straight into his arms.

Michael was still stronger than Winnie. His back pressed hard against the bedroom door, and with nowhere left to retreat, Winnie found herself pinned firmly against his chest.
