Winnie only paused for a couple of seconds before setting the porridge down without fuss. She gave it a light stir with the spoon and handed it to Michael.

Michael said nothing more. He studied her for a few seconds, then took the bowl and began eating with his head down.

He ate fast and hungrily, so much so that Winnie couldn't help warning him, "Slow down, you'll choke. There's more in the pot."

At her words, Michael's movements paused for a moment. He nodded, but kept eating just as quickly.

The bowl emptied fast. Just as Winnie moved to refill it, Michael had already risen first, carrying the whole pot out of the kitchen with him, eating as he walked.

His appetite wasn't especially large, and eating that fast, he was soon full.

Winnie offered him a napkin at just the right moment, but Michael ignored it and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand instead.

He lifted his face, and the sight of his sharpened, gaunt features gave Winnie a pang in her chest.

Barely two months apart, and Michael looked like he'd become someone else entirely, worn thin and haggard.

Gone was the refined, effortless charm he'd always carried, and gone too was the pride that had run in his bones since the day they'd first met.

In the past, even if they'd been sitting at the shabbiest street stall, no matter how hungry he was, he never would have let himself look this careless.

Especially not in front of her.

"Your cooking keeps getting better." Michael let out a slow breath, leaned back in his chair, and turned his gaze aside, offering the faint compliment.

A smile touched the corner of his mouth, but it sat only on the surface, never reaching anywhere deeper.

"You were hungry. How could you not take care of yourself when you're sick? You should be eating more nutritious food. If you can't be bothered to cook, hire someone to look after you. Even if I end up supporting you for the rest of your life, that's fine by me."
