Charlotte fell to the floor.

Ethan quickly reached out to help her up, but Charlotte shoved him away on instinct.

"Where's Noah?"

Ethan lowered his head. After a long moment, he said quietly, "Why are you suddenly asking about him?"

"He was there, wasn't he? He's the one who killed those Lacuna guys, right? If he hadn't shown up, there's no way Michael and Winnie would have gotten out safely without running into them...

"So where is he now? At the hospital, or at the police station?"

Charlotte fired off one question after another. Her voice went from frantic to faint, losing more conviction with every word.

When Ethan didn't answer, she grabbed his arm. Her eyes were red, and her voice trembled. "Did he run off again? You couldn't find him either, could you?"

For some reason, Charlotte felt that Noah having vanished would be the best news she could hope for.

Ethan still didn't answer. He kept his eyes lowered, and after a long while, he finally said, "I'm sorry."

Charlotte froze, then suddenly laughed. "What are you sorry for? For holding me back because I got too worked up? It's fine. I get it, I totally get it...
