Chapter 2 Burn It All-2
She was exhausted.
But she hated every inch of this place—even the air made her sick.
After hanging up, Aurelia went upstairs and quickly packed her things.
She also gathered everything she’d ever bought for Dominic.
Mary found her setting a pile of items on fire in the front yard.
She rushed over. “Aurelia, what are you doing? Please don’t burn those!
“If Mrs. Hawthorne sees this, she’ll be furious.”
Eleanor had been angry enough about the broken chair—this would send her over the edge.
Aurelia said, “Good—I hope she is furious. If I believed in curses, I’d curse this whole family.”
Her voice was full of hatred and disgust.
She kept going back upstairs, trip after trip, throwing everything connected to her and Dominic into the flames.
When Chloe arrived, she found Aurelia standing in the yard with fire blazing in front of her.
Her pale face was lit up by the flames. She looked fearless and cold.
Chloe rushed over and pulled Aurelia under her umbrella, shielding her from the pouring rain.
“You just had a miscarriage—how can you be out in this storm? You could get sick.”
She walked Aurelia to the car, holding her steady.
Feeling Chloe’s protective warmth, Aurelia’s intense emotions finally began to calm down.
In the car, Chloe grabbed a dry towel and roughly dried Aurelia’s soaked hair. “What were you burning?”
“Things I bought him. Things he bought me.”
Chloe glanced at her. “If you need to cry, just cry. It’s better than keeping it bottled up.”
She and Dominic had been so good together.
Yet these past six months had torn them completely apart.
Aurelia continued drying her hair with a bitter laugh. “Cry? No—why should I be the one crying?”
She was going to make the people who deserved to cry weep until they couldn’t anymore.
When her hair was half-dry, Aurelia set down the towel. “Just wait. Soon enough, they will be crying rivers.”
Meeting Aurelia’s completely cold gaze, Chloe nodded. “Right. They should be the ones crying, not you.”
Love couldn’t accommodate a third person, no matter how that third person inserted themselves.
And Lauren had been brazenly trying to steal Dominic for six months all because she thought Aurelia was powerless to stop her.
Chloe started the car and pulled away from the villa.
Rain pelted the windows as the wipers worked frantically.
Chloe said, “After you lost that baby three years ago, haven’t you been unable to conceive since?”
Three years ago, she and Dominic had been expecting.
But before Aurelia even knew she was pregnant, Lauren had hit her with a car, causing a miscarriage.
Lauren had cried even harder than Aurelia, insisting it was an accident.
The matter was swept under the rug, naturally.
Since Adrian was still alive then and Lauren hadn’t shown any obvious interest in Dominic, Aurelia hadn’t pursued it further.
Aurelia stared out at the storm. The rain was torrential—in just minutes, the streets were flooded.
Was she the type to just let things go?
Aurelia’s eyes were as cold as the rain. “First, divorce Dominic. Then…”
Then what?
Aurelia glanced at the freezing downpour outside but didn’t continue. Instead, she asked. “Marilyn Drake’s export business has been doing well these years, hasn’t it?”
Marilyn Drake—Lauren’s wealthy mother.
Lauren’s boldness these past two years came from having Eleanor as backup, plus her rich, powerful mother.
Chloe nodded, “Yes, why are you asking about her mother? That woman isn’t someone you want to cross.”
Chloe’s tone was cautionary.
Marilyn had built her business empire through ruthless means.
Aurelia asked, “What if that business collapsed?
“Those materials she exports are only in demand overseas. If that pipeline got cut off, it would destroy her completely.”
Chloe said, “Aurelia, why are you asking? I don’t have the power to take down the Drake family.”
Lauren’s mother had serious connections. She had deep roots in New York’s power circles—not someone you could easily bring down.”
When Aurelia didn’t respond, Chloe squeezed her ice-cold hand. “Please don’t do anything reckless.”
Reckless?
Aurelia didn’t answer.
But her mind drifted to the German man who had approached her a month ago—the one who had pulled her into his arms…
