Chapter 2 Burn It All-1
The room went dead silent.
Tension hung thick in the air between the three of them.
Aurelia stared at Dominic, then kicked the chair next to her. It crashed to the floor with a loud bang.
She was furious. “Tell your mother, what soup can I make?
“Lauren said she wanted my homemade chicken soup. Are you really that blind to her manipulation, or have you just forgotten that I can’t cook?”
Every word was sharp and angry.
Having just lost her baby, Aurelia was barely holding it together. Anyone who pushed her right now was going to get burned.
Eleanor was practically shaking with anger. “How dare you—”
Dominic’s face darkened. “If you can’t cook, have the staff do it. Is this really worth making a scene over?”
That same dismissive attitude. Like nothing ever mattered.
Aurelia felt her heart turn to ice.
Eleanor was beside herself. “What did this family do to deserve this? She can’t even give us one child, and now when someone else does, she throws a fit—”
“Enough!”
Dominic cut his mother off sharply.
Eleanor got even angrier. “You keep enabling her! That’s the problem!”
She turned to leave, but Aurelia’s voice stopped her.
“Mrs. Hawthorne, you’re wrong. It’s not that I can’t have children—the baby I was carrying two years ago died when Lauren hit me with her car! Don’t twist this around and blame me.”
Aurelia finally threw off the accusation Eleanor had been holding over her head for two years.
Using “Mrs. Hawthorne” instead of “Eleanor” made it crystal clear—she was done playing nice.
Being called out nearly made Eleanor faint. “This is outrageous! You’re absolutely outrageous!”
Eleanor was furious at Aurelia’s defiance.
She turned on Dominic. “This is the woman you married—you better control her!”
With that, Eleanor stormed off.
Dominic’s eyes flashed with anger at Aurelia’s disrespect, but he said nothing and followed his mother out.
Watching him leave, Aurelia felt bitter irony wash over her.
Even after all this, he was still going to Lauren.
Was it because his brother died and he felt obligated? Or did he just want to take care of Lauren all along?
Aurelia’s voice was ice-cold. “What choice do I have? Dominic looks exactly like Adrian—it helps with her grief.”
For six months, the Hawthornes had used this excuse to pull Dominic away from her.
Whenever Lauren had a breakdown, they’d immediately call Dominic over.
Chloe knew all this and got even angrier. “I think that whole family has lost their minds.”
Lauren couldn’t accept that Adrian was gone, so they kept having Dominic hover around her.
Dominic had his own wife—what was this about comforting another woman?
Aurelia said, “I had a miscarriage this afternoon. When you called, I was in surgery.”
Chloe paused. Wait, what?
When it sank in, Chloe exploded.
“You miscarried while Dominic stayed with his sister-in-law? Has he lost his mind? Does he even know?”
His own wife losing a baby while he’s at another woman’s bedside? Was Dominic insane?
Aurelia’s voice was cold. “Come get me.”
