< Billionaire’s Regret After Losing Her
Chapter 248 Cutting Costs

“What do you mean ‘keep failing’? I have to win him over fast,” Eleanor snapped, cutting Lauren off before she could finish.
Right now, as long as Aurelia refused to divorce, there was no way they could kick her out of the Hawthorne family.
And as for her demand for the entire Hawthorne Group—that
was never going to happen.
That left only one option, Grant.
So as far as they were concerned, Lydia had to do whatever it took to steal Grant away from Aurelia.
Hearing the harsh tone in Eleanor’s voice, Lydia felt uncertain about whether she could actually pull this off.
But right now, backing down wasn’t an option.
Lauren nodded. “Alright then, I’ll have the car come pick you up tomorrow. It’s too late today.”
By the time they’d walked all the way back here, it would be six o’clock, and they’d be exhausted beyond words.
Lydia hesitated for a moment and nodded. “Thanks, Lauren.”

Lauren was actually starting to regret this whole thing now.

What the hell was she thinking, going after Aurelia like that? All she’d wanted was to stay with the Hawthorne family after Adrian died; that was it.
But every time she saw Dominic and Aurelia together, it made her chest tight, and her stomach turn.
Too late to think about any of that now.
“I’m gonna sleep for a bit,” Lauren said. “Wake me up when it’s dinner time.”
She was exhausted, completely drained. She knew Kellen had arrived, but she didn’t have the energy to deal with him right
now.
Lydia and Eleanor nodded and left the room when they saw
Lauren needed to rest.
They figured Aurelia would have someone call them when dinner was ready-they’d just have to deal with whatever crappy food she gave them.
This morning, when they’d seen those meals, they couldn’t stomach any of it, but now they were starving. At this point, they’d eat anything as long as it was food.
What they didn’t expect was that no one came to get them. By eight o’clock that night, there was still nothing.

Lydia couldn’t take it anymore and went to find Aurelia herself.
By the time she got downstairs, Aurelia had already finished dinner. She returned to her room, so they ran into Gareth instead.
Gareth looked at them and said, “Ms. Hawthorne, Ms. Sterling asked me to remind you that the Hawthorne family doesn’t keep freeloaders.”
Eleanor had just stepped out behind them and heard exactly what Gareth said to Lydia.
Her face went dark almost instantly.
Those were her words-the exact words she used to throw
at Aurelia every single time Dominic brought her back to Hawthorne Manor.
Now hearing Gareth repeat them to Lydia made Eleanor’s
blood boil even hotter.
Lydia’s face turned just as ugly, and she snapped, “What’s that supposed to mean? What do you mean you don’t keep freeloaders?”
Aurelia really thought the Hawthorne family was her own house now, didn’t she?

What the hell was she being so arrogant about?

This was the Hawthorne family-whether they worked or not had nothing to do with her, so what right did she have to talk about not keeping freeloaders?
Gareth continued calmly, “From now on, if you want anything here, you’ll need to earn it through work.”
Lydia was speechless.
Eleanor was loo.
They had to work to earn their meals at the Hawthorne family home? They were actual members of the Hawthorne family, for god’s sake.
Who the hell did Aurelia think she was?
Eleanor snapped, “So let me get this straight-our people cook with our family’s ingredients, and then we have to work for it? What kind of logic is that?”
The word “logic” coming from Eleanor’s mouth right now was ironic as hell.
She’d never been a reasonable person.
But now that Aurelia was being unreasonable, Eleanor clearly couldn’t handle it.

Lydia frowned and said, “Wait. Where are our people?”
Right. Where were their servants?
Come to think of it, she hadn’t seen a single one since they got back.
Where did everyone go?
Lydia’s question made Eleanor realize it, too. She hadn’t seen
any of their household staff since they’d returned.
Eleanor’s jaw tightened as she turned to Gareth and demanded, “Where is everyone?”
“Cutting costs. I let them all go,” he said flatly.
Eleanor went silent.
Lydia had nothing to say.
Cutting costs?
Just hearing those words now made both Eleanor and Lydia’s heads throb.
Was Aurelia really cutting costs?
No, she was deliberately torturing them. 5/7

The worst part was that even knowing Aurelia’s intentions, what could they do? They had no way to fight back.
“So what exactly do you want us to do?” Lydia asked through gritted teeth.
As soon as the words left her mouth, Eleanor grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
Why was she even asking? Did Lydia actually want to give in to Aurelia?
Eleanor wanted Lydia to stop talking.
But Lydia was starving and couldn’t take it anymore. “Fine, just tell me what I need to do,” she said.
“Lydia,” Eleanor said.
“What else can we do? We both know she’s doing this on purpose to mess with us, but what choice do we have? Can you do anything about her?” Lydia asked.
Lydia was genuinely starving.
Her pride as a Hawthorne daughter didn’t mean much right now, not here in Hawthorne Manor, and after just two days, she could barely hold onto it anymore.

Eleanor felt her nerves fraying when she heard that. Her head

was pounding, and she couldn’t think straight.
“Can you just call Dominic first?” Eleanor asked.
Dominic should be home soon, and he could bring them something to eat. That would solve everything.
Did they really have to cave to Aurelia like this?
“You call Dominic then. Did he even pick up when you tried?” Lydia shot back.
