Chapter 281 Regret
Lucas hissed under his breath. “After everything Aurelia put him through, his condition didn’t even flare up once. Did he seriously just forget he was supposed to be sick?”
Just moments ago, Lucas had thought Ethan was being rude when he said Lauren “forgot to be sick.” Still, now he couldn’t help saying the exact same thing to Dominic over the phone.
Dominic’s expression darkened. “What the hell are you trying to say?”
“I’m saying I don’t think she’s actually sick.”
“Did Aurelia’s paranoia rub off on you or something?”
Aurelia had always suspected Lauren was faking her condition, and now Lucas was jumping on that bandwagon, too?
When Lucas heard that response, his heart sank like a stone.
He suddenly understood the helplessness Aurelia must have felt every time she tried to talk to Dominic about this stuff.
There was no getting through to someone with that attitude.
The second anyone said anything remotely critical about the Hawthorne family, Dominic would lose it.

It had been that way when Aurelia tried to tell him.
And now, even when his own friend tried to warn him, he reacted the same damn way.
“Fine, fine, you’re right. My mistake,” Lucas said flatly.
What the hell was wrong with him? After everything that had happened recently, Dominic was still blindly defending the Hawthornes?
Lucas didn’t even know what to say anymore.
He hung up in frustration.
Ethan glanced at him. “He didn’t believe you?”
“He didn’t even believe Aurelia. Why would he believe me?”
“You shouldn’t have bothered calling him in the first place.”
Lucas fell silent. Yeah, that call had been a complete waste of time.

On the other end of the phone, Dominic sat in his car as it got stopped at another checkpoint.

Lucas’ call had put him in a foul mood, and now he couldn’t even drive straight home.
He’d have to get out and walk for over forty minutes, and he’d need to move fast.
It was already dark outside, and Jason glanced at Dominic awkwardly. “Why don’t you crash at my place tonight?”
“You want her to burn your house down too?”
Jason fell silent. After hearing that, he didn’t dare offer shelter
anymore.
Aurelia had been acting like a complete psycho lately, biting anyone who got close.
She’d already burned down every single Hawthorne family property, and Marilyn’s place had been the first to go.
On top of that, she’d made sure every hotel in the city refused to take in anyone from the Hawthorne family.
If someone took Dominic in now, their house would probably be next.
“Should I go in with you then?”

“No.” Dominic snapped the word out and got out of the car.
Aurelia was ruthless, and now the entire Hawthorne family lived under her thumb.
Even the ones who’d bent the knee to her weren’t guaranteed safety.
The cold wind whipped through the falling snow, and Dominic walked under the streetlights. The man who’d always carried himself like royalty had finally fallen from grace.
By the time he got back to Hawthorne Manor, it was past eight in the evening. Dominic’s stamina was better than most. He
wasn’t as exhausted as Eleanor and the others, who could barely move, but after walking that far, he was definitely tired.
Aurelia had already finished dinner.
She was heading upstairs when Dominic stopped her. “We need to talk.”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” Aurelia said.
Talk? What was the point? She wouldn’t let them go until they were completely broken, until they’d suffered enough. Before Eleanor and the others got what they deserved, she’d make damn sure they’d been through hell first.

“I really regret marrying you,” Dominic said.
Aurelia went still. Finally, Dominic had said the word-regret.
These past few days, he’d regretted it every single moment. He regretted marrying Aurelia. If he’d just listened to his family back then, the Hawthorne family wouldn’t be in this mess right
now.
Aurelia laughed bitterly. “It’s only been a few days and you already regret it? I’ve been living with that regret for almost a year.”
Ever since Adrian died, she’d been living with constant regret about marrying Dominic.
She’d only been at Hawthorne Manor for a few days, and now Dominic stood here telling her he regretted marrying her, too.
Dominic asked, “What the hell do you want?”
Aurelia shot back, “What do I want? You saw it yourself. I want the entire Hawthorne family to suffer.”
Did he really need to ask?
Everything she’d done so far made it pretty damn clear.
Dominic said, “Let me tell you something. Hawthorne Group’s 5/7

problems are beyond fixing now, and if this keeps going, neither of us wins. Walk away now and you can still take the five billion. Wait any longer and you won’t get a cent.”
She thought about how she couldn’t even get to Germany
anymore.
And Smith Group had made their intentions obvious-they were coming for Hawthorne Group with everything they had.
Dominic had this gut feeling that Smith Group wouldn’t stop until Hawthorne Group went under.
He’d always been the one in control of everything.
But this time, he wasn’t so sure he could win.
Aurelia laughed. “Is that so?”
“You really want the entire Hawthorne Group?” Dominic asked.
“You forgot something. I want Hawthorne Manor too.”
She didn’t just want Hawthorne Group. She wanted the family estate as well.
This manor was the only property Hawthorne Group had left, and she was taking it all.

Once she took everything, the Hawthorne family would have nothing.
The way she was going after them, they might not even have a place to sleep. They’d end up on the streets.
“Does it have to be this ruthless?” Dominic’s jaw clenched.
Aurelia met his eyes. “You think this is ruthless?”
Compared to what the Hawthorne family had done, this was nothing.
“What will it take for you to stop?” Dominic demanded.
