Chapter 280 Forget to Be Sick

Grant’s earlier comments had planted a seed in Dominic’s mind, and now he was almost sure Aurelia had some kind of
relationship with Smith Group.
The question made Lucas want to lose it on the other end of
the line.
This whole conversation was giving him a headache.
“No, really. She didn’t say anything,” he insisted.
Even if he knew something, there was no way he could tell
Dominic.
Who knew what Aurelia was planning when it came to the Hawthorne family?
Dominic was getting nowhere with Lucas, and his patience had completely run out.
“Fine. I’m hanging up,” he said flatly.
He was probably overthinking this whole thing anyway.
Someone like Aurelia couldn’t possibly have connections to anyone at Smith Group.

She didn’t have that kind of pull.
Just as Dominic was about to end the call, Lucas stopped him. “Dominic.”
“What?”
Why was he stopping him now? Did Lucas finally have something to say?
Could Aurelia have a relationship with someone at Smith Group?
If that was true, this news wouldn’t be good for him at all.
“I want to pull out of the Newlife Project,” Lucas said.
“What did you just say?”
Dominic’s expression darkened completely when he heard that Lucas wanted to withdraw his investment from the Newlife
Project.
The mess with Germany had already killed all his overseas projects, and now Lucas was telling him he wanted out of their partnership, too?
This was the last thing Dominic needed right now.

Dominic’s breath came in sharp bursts, and he forced the words through clenched teeth. “Why?”
Lucas didn’t hesitate. “The Caldwell Group’s running into some problems, and I need to pull that money out.”
“You know damn well what Hawthorne Group’s been dealing with lately.”
“I know.” That was exactly why Lucas had to pull out now.
After finding out about Aurelia’s connection to the Smith Group, Lucas knew the Hawthorne Group was finished. There was no coming back from this.
Either way, Dominic was going down, so Lucas figured he might as well pull the Caldwell Group’s investment out now and help Dominic later when he actually needed it.
But right now, with Smith Group coming after him like this, nobody could help him. Nobody.
Lucas understood that better than anyone.
Dominic closed his eyes. “Fine.”
The word came out hollow, laced with disappointment in a friendship he’d believed in.

Grant had destroyed things between him and Aurelia, and now Lucas was walking away from their partnership too.
The whole thing suddenly felt like a sick joke.
Lucas’ voice softened. “Thanks for understanding.”
Dominic hung up without another word.
Thanks for understanding? Was this what betrayal felt like? Everyone turning their backs all at once?
Aurelia didn’t want him anymore. Grant had stolen his wife. And now Lucas was done with their friendship, too.
Everything he’d built, everything that felt solid and secure, had just crumbled to nothing.

“Lucas, are you sure about this?” Ethan studied his friend carefully, concern etched across his face.
Lucas had just dropped the bomb about pulling out of the Newlife Project, and Ethan couldn’t shake the feeling that this was a knife in Dominic’s back. “Don’t you think this is cruel? I mean, the timing couldn’t be worse for him.”
Dominic was drowning right now. The Hawthorne Group was 4/7

hemorrhaging money, his marriage to Aurelia had imploded, and Grant had completely cut ties with him. Now Lucas was jumping ship, too.
“Dominic’s barely keeping his head above water,” Ethan added.
Lucas shook his head. “You don’t get it. Real friendship isn’t about going down with the ship. Some battles we just can’t fight for him, no matter how much we want to.”
He leaned back in his chair and sighed. “All we can do is wait for him to get through this mess on his own. Then we’ll be there.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Ethan admitted, though he still looked troubled. “But Grant? I really don’t understand what happened there. This whole disaster is on Dominic, though. He never learned how to handle his family. First one of us to get married, but somehow the least mature about it.”
The way Dominic had mishandled everything with Aurelia and the Hawthornes was a complete trainwreck.
Thinking about Dominic’s family situation made Ethan remember something else. His eyes narrowed. “Wait, have you noticed Lauren hasn’t had any episodes lately? Her depression just… vanished. What’s that about?”
Lucas froze.

Ethan’s question hung in the air between them, and suddenly Lucas found himself just as confused.
Lucas said, “Oh yeah, now that you mention it, I totally forgot about that. Ever since Aurelia moved back to Hawthorne Manor, Lauren’s depression hasn’t acted up at all.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Why? Did she just forget to be sick?”
Lucas went silent.
Forget to be sick. Really.
Was it even polite to question someone like that?
The thing was, Lucas had always suspected Lauren was faking her depression, and Aurelia thought the same thing.
But Dominic believed it was real, so every time Lauren had an episode, he’d rush over to Hawthorne Manor. And every time he went to see Lauren, Aurelia would lose her mind.
That’s how things had gotten to this point.
After thinking it over, Lucas decided to call Dominic. He was already near the entrance to Hawthorne Manor when his phone rang.

Dominic’s tone was cold when he answered. “What?”
He was obviously still pissed about Lucas wanting to pull out of the Newlife Project. From his perspective, this was a knife in the back from someone he considered a brother.
Lucas cut straight to it. “Doesn’t it seem like Lauren hasn’t had an episode in a while?”
Dominic paused. “What?”
