Chapter 29 Please Save Her
“You’re overthinking it,” Aurelia said flatly.
The truth was, she despised him now.
His kisses. His arms. His hands. His embrace…

Every part of him that had ever touched Lauren made her feel
sick.
Dominic didn’t believe it. He figured she was just putting on an act to make him angry.
“Alright, stop being mad. I know you’ve been upset lately. I won’t see Lauren anymore, okay?”
Whenever he didn’t know what else to do, he tried to sweet–talk his way out of it.
What he didn’t realize was that Aurelia wasn’t the same anymore–and his usual tricks wouldn’t work.
Back at Hawthorne Manor, when Lauren had shoved her to the ground and she’d clutched his pant leg, telling him her stomach hurt–that had been his last chance.
For the past six months, he’d put Lauren first in everything.

things out.
But in the end, he’d carried Lauren away anyway.
Aurelia turned her head to the side.
Seeing her like this gave Dominic a headache. “Don’t talk about divorce, okay?”
Aurelia still ignored him.
Dominic rubbed his aching temples. “When did you start talking to Grant?”
Grant.
Dominic was convinced that Gareth had been sent by Grant.
Aurelia let out a cold laugh. “Lauren didn’t just blind you–she completely messed up your head too.”
Her and Grant? That ice–cold man who intimidated women so much they wouldn’t even approach him? What could she possibly have to do with him?
Dominic’s expression darkened.
Aurelia let out a mocking laugh. “Not seeing Lauren anymore?
Wow.”

The promise was laughable. He’d never been able to keep it.
Dominic couldn’t stand the distrust in her eyes. He reached out, trying to pull her into his arms.
This was how it had always worked before.
Whenever she got upset, he’d coax her a little, hug her, and everything would smooth over.
But this time, Aurelia didn’t soften.
She stood there, unmoving, watching him with ice–cold eyes.
Irritation flared in Dominic’s chest, but he forced his voice to stay calm.
“These past six months, all I wanted was for Adrian’s babies to be born safely. I know you’re angry with me, but—”
Before he could finish, his phone started vibrating.
Eleanor.
He didn’t need to think twice to know it had something to do with Lauren again.
Annoyed, he hung up.

They weren’t going to stop until he answered.
Aurelia’s smile turned sharper. “Go ahead. Answer it.”
“She’s probably up on the hospital roof right now, threatening to jump for Adrian.”
Her voice was light, almost amused.
“Only your face–the one that looks exactly like Adrian’s—can talk her down.”
Depression really was the perfect shield.
It made people believe her.
And worse–it made them pity her.
Every time the Hawthorne family worried her dramatics might hurt the babies, they rushed to call Dominic.
Dominic took a deep breath and reached out, ruffling Aurelia’s soft hair like he was soothing an angry kitten.
Then he answered the phone, his voice cold.
“What is it?”
“Dominic,” Eleanor sobbed, “you need to come now! Lauren’s 4/6

on the hospital roof–she’s going to jump!”
Aurelia’s mocking smile deepened.
Of course. She could predict Lauren’s moves every single time.
Lauren always managed to find the perfect excuse to pull Dominic away whenever he was with her.
Dominic’s face darkened.
Before he could say anything, Eleanor shouted through the phone, “I know you said you’d stop caring once the babies were born, but the babies were just delivered–if she really dies, how are you supposed to face Adrian in the afterlife?”
Dominic said nothing.
His expression was stormy.
Lauren’s dramatics never seemed to end.
He hung up and looked at Aurelia. She had already opened the car door and taken an umbrella from the back seat.
In the rain, she silently opened it and stood there.
Dominic didn’t leave right away. He reached out to grab her arm. “Let me drive you home first.”

Aurelia didn’t respond. She just stood quietly in the rain.
Ding!
Dominic’s phone chimed.
A clear photo popped up–Lauren standing at the edge of the hospital rooftop.
Eleanor called again immediately. “Dominic, please save her… I’m begging you!”
Her sobbing was frantic, nearly hysterical.
Finally, Dominic started the car. He hung up and looked at Aurelia. “Take a cab home.”
He didn’t wait for her response. The car shot forward like a bullet.
Aurelia stood there, alone in the rain.
Water streamed off the edge of the umbrella, hitting the ground and splashing onto her feet.
Cold and soaked–just like her heart.
