Chapter 45 Was Someone Sending Her a Message?
Marilyn’s fury was reaching a boiling point.
She had a major deal brewing in Germany–practically locked in, just needed signatures. But with New York spiraling into chaos, she’d had to fly back and handle this mess personally.
And once she cleaned it up? Right back on a plane to Germany tomorrow afternoon.
“It’s like Aurelia’s a completely different person,” Lauren said, voice tight. “She won’t listen to anyone anymore.”
“And I don’t know where the hell she’s getting this power from, but those gossip sites? Even Dominic can’t take them down.”
Just talking about it made Lauren frustrated as hell.
Marilyn’s expression darkened. Can’t take them down?
She’d already had people in New York working on damage control from overseas. Same result. Same damn wall.
“Someone’s backing her,” Marilyn said coldly. “Has to be.”
Lauren shook her head. “I don’t know.”

And she really didn’t.
But hearing her mother say it out loud? Now Lauren was suspicious too.
Who the hell is helping Aurelia?
Because there was no way Aurelia could pull this off alone.‘
“Mom, you have to make her pay.”
Lauren was pissed and just wanted Aurelia destroyed.
Whoever was pulling strings behind the scenes? She didn’t give a damn right now.
She wanted Aurelia to suffer. Now.
Marilyn’s thin lips pressed into a hard line, her blood–red lipstick making her look dangerously cold.
She tugged at her expensive Chanel coat and let out a bitter laugh.
“Of course I’m making her pay. Already sent people to trash that house she bought at the Evergreen Residences.”
Lauren’s eyes widened.
Wait–she has a house at the Evergreen Residences?

Hearing that Aurelia had bought her own place, Lauren’s voice dripped with disgust.
She’d claimed she wasn’t after the Hawthorne family’s money
so what was this, then? Using their money to buy real estate?
Marilyn’s blood–red nails traced the edge of her watch.
She didn’t answer. Just said coolly, “Tonight’s just a warning.”
Tomorrow? That was when it would really start.
And Aurelia only had one chance. Hopefully tonight she’d get
the hint.
Lauren’s heart swelled with satisfaction.
“But what if she ignores your warning tomorrow?”
With her mother by her side, Lauren felt completely backed up.
Aurelia–an orphan with no one behind her–really thought she could challenge her?
This time, she’d see just how tough Aurelia could be when facing her mother.
Lauren knew all about her mom’s methods.

Aurelia would definitely pay for what she’d done these past few days!
Sure enough, Marilyn’s eyes narrowed, sharp and dangerous.
“Then I won’t bother sparing her anymore.”
Her fingers stilled on the watch. Her gaze turned sharp as a‘ blade.
Lauren felt even more satisfied.
Aurelia had been stubborn as hell these past few days— but Lauren couldn’t wait to watch Marilyn tear her apart tomorrow.
And right now? Aurelia had probably already heard about the Evergreen Residences getting trashed.
Her little escape plan for the divorce? Reduced to rubble.
She was probably crying in that pile of wreckage right now.
The thought sent a thrill of vindictive pleasure through Lauren’s chest.
“And about Dominic, Mom, I—”
Mentioning Dominic instantly killed Lauren’s good mood. 20:08

Dominic had been by her side for the past six months.
She’d always thought he had some feelings for her too. But the he’d been acting around Aurelia lately? It terrified her in a way nothing else had
way
Marilyn’s eyes went cold. “Don’t rush things with Dominic. Deal with Aurelia first.”
Lauren nodded. “Right. Aurelia first.”
With her mom here, Lauren instantly felt like she had her backbone again.
She opened her mouth to say more when Marilyn’s phone buzzed.
Marilyn pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and answered.
“Ray.”
Her assistant, Ray Willis.
Ray’s voice came through, tight and serious.
“Mrs. Drake–Emerald Bay Residences is on fire.”
“What?”

a deafening crash.
Her face went ashen. Her grip on the phone tightened until her knuckles went white.
“What the hell happened?”
“Still investigating the cause, but the flames are massive. Property management couldn’t contain it. Fire department’s on the way now.”
The Emerald Bay Residences. Her crown jewel.
A single mom with a daughter, fighting her way up until she finally owned a place there. That address alone screamed top tier.
Whenever she was in New York, that’s where she stayed.
But today? She’d just landed back in the city, hadn’t even made it home yet–and it was burning.
Coincidence?
Or was someone sending her a message?
