She had grown up with their cruelty. Had learned, painfully, how to endure sharp glances, hushed insults, and words meant to remind her she never truly belonged. Still, no matter how familiar the pain was, it never stopped hurting.
After all these years, she was still nothing more than a nuisance to them.
“If your bitch mother hadn’t seduced my son,” Elvira shrieked, turning suddenly toward Red Knowles, “we would not be facing this disgrace!”
Cassie’s breath hitched, stunned and speechless.
“You and your mother are a curse to my family!” Elvira went on, her voice trembling with fury.
“You should have discarded that wretched thing before it even grew in her shameless mother’s filthy womb, Red Knowles!”
Red Knowles stood rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles along his cheek bulged–anger mirrored perfectly from mother to son.
Elvira turned back to Cassie, eyes blazing.
“Do you really think including your mother’s filthy name in my company will change your origins?” she sneered.
“You are still a harlot’s daughter. The child of a lowly maid who schemed her way into my son’s bed!”
If looks could kill, Cassie would have been lifeless long ago. Even her voice betrayed her now–caught tight in her throat, refusing to surface.
Just like in the past, she didn’t dare speak. She had learned early that silence was safer than protest, that obedience dulled the blows.

Ashton didn’t flinch.
“This ceased to be a family affair the moment this meeting began,” he replied coolly. “This is a plenary session. And as a major stockholder, I have both the authority and the obligation to ensure these proceedings remain civil.”
His gaze was steady, unyielding.

The silence that followed was thick, heavy, and charged–while Cassie stood perfectly still, bearing wounds no one in that room could see.
“Then remove that bastard from this room,” Elvira said coldly.
“She doesn’t belong here an eyesore in my company.”
“May I remind you, Madame Elvira,” Zandrie began, his voice controlled, “Knowles & Greene Corporation has already been acquired by Holt Corporation. And Miss Cassidy Greene is

Every word landed with practiced cruelty,
Though none of it was new to Cassie’s ears, each syllable still found its mark, piercing her heart with a familiar to wounds never truly hardened, no matter how often they were reopened.
“I’ll just leave,” Cassie whispered, tightening her grip on Zandrie’s arm.
