Chapter 137
“Yes… but he doesn’t complain. He carries his loneliness like it’s something ordinary.”
And as Kai finally made it across the monkey bars, lifting his arms triumphantly in victory, Zab clapped softly-her applause filled with pride, and perhaps, a silent wish that someday the boy would have more than just his own shadow to play with.
“I made it, Mamo!”
Kai ran toward Zab, his small hands clapping in triumph, his face glowing with pride.
“Yes, you did!” Zab laughed, her heart swelling as she knelt down to catch him in a warm embrace.
“Our Kai is so strong!”
She pulled back slightly, brushing his hair away from his forehead.
“You are such a brave boy.”
“You are indeed a strong young man,” the elderly woman added with a gentle smile.
Kai turned to her immediately. Remembering his manners, he straightened and gave a small, respectful bow.
“Thank you, Madame.”
The moment he lifted his head and faced her fully, the woman froze.
“Oh… my…”
Her breath caught sharply. One hand flew to her chest as her face drained of color, her eyes widening in shock as they fixed on
Kai’s features.
“Madame?” Zab stood at once, alarmed by the sudden change.
“What’s wrong?”
Kai stepped closer too, his brows knitting together in concern.
“Did I startle you, Madame?”
“L… I…” The woman tried to speak, but the words seemed to fail her. She shook her head as if trying to clear it.
“Madame?” The nurse quickly knelt beside her, checking her pulse and expression.
The old woman continued staring at Kai, her eyes trembling.
“You… you look exactly like…”
Kai tilted his head, curiosity replacing worry. “Like who, Madame?”
The woman blinked, then forced a small, unsteady smile.

“Ah… it can’t be. My poor eyesight must be playing tricks on me.” She shook her head again, trying to compose herself, though her gaze never quite left the boy’s face.
“Are you sure you’re alright, Madame?” Zab asked softly.
“I’in fine…” the woman nodded, but her eyes lingered on Kai with an intensity she could not hide.
“I’ll bring you back now, Madame,” the nurse said worriedly as she began to rise.
“No,” the woman stopped her gently.

“I’m fine. I want to stay a little longer.” Her expression softened as she reached out a trembling hand toward Kai.
“I would like to watch this brave boyplay.” Her fingers lightly touched his cheek
“Such a handsome and adorable child,” she whispered, her voice filled with unexpected fondness.
Kai puffed his chest proudly.
“I’ll cross the monkey bars again!”
Zab wiped the light sheen of sweat from his neck, her tone affectionate but cautious.
“Be careful, my love. Your mom will have my head if you get hurt.”
“I’m a big boy now, Mamo,” Kai declared confidently.
“I crossed it once. I can cross it again.”
Before she could say more, he turned and ran back toward the monkey bars.
With renewed determination, Kai climbed up and began moving across, one hand after another. Zab watched closely, pride and worry mixing in her chest as he reached the middle.
“You can do it…” she murmured under her breath.
He was almost at the end. Just one more bar. Then suddenly—
His grip slipped.
“Kai!”
Zab’s heart dropped as he fell to the ground with a dull thud, a small cry escaping his lips.
She ran toward him, panic overtaking her.
“Oh my-quick! Take me to him! Check on him!” the elderly/woman ordered urgently, her voice trembling as the nurse hurried to push her wheelchair forward.
“Kai…” Zab dropped to her knees beside him, her hands shaking as she hovered, afraid to move him.
“Let me check him, Madame,” the nurse said calmly, kneeling down. She carefully turned the boy onto his back.
“Mamo…” Kai whimpered weakly.
“Oh my… there’s blood…” the elderly woman gasped.
Zab froze. For a second, she couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t move.
“My head hurts, Mamo…” Kai cried softly,
“There’s a cut along his hairline,” the nurse assessed quickly.
“We need first aid immediately.”
୮
She reached beneath the wheelchair and pulled out a compact emergency kit, swiftly pressing sterile gauze against the wound.
“We need to bring him to the emergency room,” she added firmly.
“He needs proper medical attention.”
The elderly woman’s expression hardened with urgency.
“Call Dr. Demetri,” she instructed at once.

“Tell him to prepare the best pediatrician. Inform then we’re bringing a child with a head injury. Tell them to be quick.”
“Yes, Madanie.” The nurse immediately placed the call, efficiently relaying the location and the situation.
“Kai…” Zab sat beside him, carressing his face, her hands trembling while the nurse secured the bandage.
“Mamo… don’t cry,” Kai whispered, even as his face twisted in pain.
“I’m fine.”
That was when Zab realized tears were already streaming down her cheeks.
“I need to call your mom,” she said shakily, fumbling for her phone.
“Don’t worry,” the elderly woman said gently but firmly.
“I have the best medical team waiting. I’ll also call my grandson.”
She lifted her phone, her expression turning serious.
“Hello, Ashton,” she said the moment the call connected.
“I’m heading to Bay City Medical Center. Meet me there immediately.”
Her eyes shifted back to Kai, concern-and something deeper, something unsettled-still lingering in her gaze.
