Chapter 139

“There was a small accident at the park. I had the boy brought here for treatment

“An accident?” Ashton frowned, his brows knitting together.

“What were you doing at the park at this hour?”

“”

Even as he spoke, his gaze began searching the room, instinctively looking for the reason behind the urgency.

Then his eyes found the hospital bed. And the boy sitting on it.

Kai looked back at him calmly, his small face composed despite the bandage along his hairline.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The room fell into a quiet stillness as their gazes locked-Ashton’s sharp and searching, Kai’s steady and curious.

“I apologize for the inconvenience I caused you, Sir,” Kai said politely after a moment, lowering his head in a small, respectful bow.

The simple gesture broke the silence.

“Kai?” Ashton breathed, surprise flickering across his face as recognition dawned.

His grandmother turned to him. “You know him?”

Ashton didn’t answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the boy, as if piecing together a memory long buried.

“I… think I’ve met him before,” he said slowly. “At the airport. Three… maybe four years ago.”

His voice softened slightly as the memory became clearer.

“It was you,” he murmured, still looking at Kai. “You were with your grandmother.”

Then, as if needing confirmation, his gaze shifted from the boy to Zab.

There was a brief pause-his eyes studying her face carefully, measuring, remembering-before a faint look of certainty settled in his expression.

“Yeah… I remember now.”

Ashton gave a slow nod, his eyes never leaving Kai.

“I could never forget you,” he continued quietly.

“Especially your face. A smart boy who resembled so much of-”

He stopped mid-sentence. A breath escaped him, heavy and restrained.

“You noticed it too, Ashton?” Carina asked, unable to hide the urgency in her voice.

“Yes, Grandma.” His jaw tightened slightly.

“Even more now that he’s grown. It’s… quite apparent.”

Carina’s fingers curled subtly over the armrest of her wheelchair.

“I knew I wasn’t mistaken,” she whispered, her gaze lingering on Kai with a mixture of disbelief and something dangerously close to hope.

While the two exchanged their loaded glances, Zab stood frozen.

Her eyes drifted from Ashton to Kai. She had seen it too-long ago.

The first time they crossed paths in the airport Younge during that flight years back, the resemblance had startled her. But Kai had been so small then, and Ashton had left before she could dwell on it.

Now… Now the similarity was undeniable. The shape of the eyes. The calm yet piercing gaze. Even the way they held themselves

in silence.

The air in the room thickened with unspoken questions

Then-

Zab’s phone vibrated in her trembling hand. Her heart sank.

She inhaled deeply before answering.

“Hello…” Her voice came out softer than intended.

On the other end, panic was evident.

Zab quickly explained the situation, her words careful but reassuring, and with Dr. Demetri’s help, she gave clear directions towards the room.

“They’re on their way,” she said quietly after ending the call.

The room barely had time to settle before hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor.

Two figures appeared at the doorway-breathless, pale, and visibly shaken.

“Mom!”

“Dada!”

Kai’s face lit up instantly. He lifted his arms toward them, all traces of discomfort forgotten at the sight of his parents.

Cassie rushed forward, unbothered of anything, her eyes scanning every inch of her son before pulling him carefully into her

arms.

“Are you hurt? Does it still hurt? Let me see-” Her voice trembled as she examined the bandage along his hairline.

“I’m okay, Mom,” Kai said softly. “Mamo cried more than me.”

Behind her, Zandrie stood rigid, his protective gaze only settling on Kai.

Only then did Ashton and Carina react upon seeing the woman who had just entered.

“Cassie?”

The name slipped from Ashton’s lips before he could stop it.

Carina’s eyes widened in equal shock. (16

“Cassie?” she echoed.

The room fell into stunned silence. Cassie, still holding her son, slowly lifted her head.

And her eyes met Ashton’s.
