Bound By A Broken Night novel Chapter 143

Chapter 143

“I am Kai Pierce.”

Kai spoke the words with quiet certainty, as if he had just uncovered something important about himself-something that

finally fit.

Cassie’s eyes softened, her heart swelling as she cupped his cheek.

“Yes, my love,” she said gently.

“You are Kai Pierce.” Her smile deepened, warm and proud.

“You are the son of an honorable man-Ashton Pierce.”

She brushed his hair back tenderly before her gaze shifted toward the elderly woman nearby.

“And you also have a wonderful great-grandmother,” she continued softly.

“Madame Carina Pierce.”

At the mention of her name, Carina’s trembling hand rose to her lips, her eyes already overflowing.

Kai’s head turned immediately, his eyes widening with bright excitement.

“I have a great-grandmother?”

“Yes, baby,” Cassie nodded, letting out a small, emotional chuckle. “You do.”

Kai looked between the adults, trying to absorb this sudden expansion of his world. Then his gaze moved to Zab, who stood nearby, still struggling to wipe away the tears that refused to stop.

“Will she love me like my Mamo?” he asked innocently.

Zab pressed a hand to her chest, her voice breaking as she tried to answer through her sobs.

“Anyone would love our Kai,” she managed, her words trembling.

“Our adorable, smart Kai.”

Kai seemed to think about that for a moment.

“I love my Mamo and Dada, so much” he said seriously.

“But… I still have more love for my great-grandmother… and my real Papa.

The last words came out shyly.

His cheeks flushed, and he quickly hid his face against Cassie’s chest, suddenly embarrassed by his own confession.

“Oh… my…”

Carina gasped softly, tears spilling freely down her face-not from shock this time, but from overwhelming joy.

Across the room, Ashton bowed his head.

His shoulders shook again, but this time the emotion was deeper, more complex-gratitude tangled with regret, hope tangled

with fear.

“Cassie…” Ashton called hoarsely.

His voice trembled as he tried to steady himself, but the words seemed to fight their way out, heavy with everything he had been holding back.

“feel like I don’t deserve you… or our son.”

He dragged a hand across his face, but the tears kept corning, slipping through his fingers no matter how hard he tried to compose himself.

“I’m scared, Cass…” he admitted quietly, his voice breaking again.

For a man who commanded rooms and carried the weight of corporations without hesitation, the fear in his voice was raw- unguarded.

“Scared that after everything…” he continued, swallowing hard, “I might not live up to you. To him.”

His eyes lifted briefly toward Kai before dropping again.

“You’ve both become such wonderful people,” he murmured, his tone uncertain, almost small.

“I don’t know if I deserve to stand beside you… or if I can be the father he deserves.”

For a moment, the room was still.

Then Cassie shook her head gently, a soft, reassuring smile forming on her lips.

“There is nothing to be scared of, Ashton,” she said calmly.

Before Ashton could respond, a small voice spoke.

“Kai gets scared too sometimes.”

Everyone turned.

Kai had lifted his head from Cassie’s shoulder. His eyes-so much like Ashton’s-were steady as he looked directly at the man.

“But Mama said fear is not bad,” he continued seriously.

He slid off the bed slowly, careful of his sore body, and stood facing Ashton.

“She said fear is what makes us try harder.”

His small hands clasped together in front of him, the way he did when he was thinking carefully.

“We get scared because we want the best,” he went on.

“So when we feel scared, we just have to choose what is right.” He nodded once, as if confirming his own understanding.

୮ “Because everything in life is a decision.”

The words were simple.

But coming from a six-year-old, spoken with such quiet conviction, they carried unexpected weight.

Kai took a small step closer to Ashton. And in that moment, it felt less like a child speaking-more like a son, gently steadying the father who was afraid to reach for him.
