Chapter 144

Ashton slowly lifted his head his gaze finding the small figure standing bravely before him. Kai did not waver. Those calm, steady eyes-so much like his own met his without fear.

The sight alone nearly shattered/him.

“Papa will always choose you, Kai…” Ashton said, his voice rough, fragile in a way no one had ever heard before. He swallowed hard, gathering the last threads of his courage.

“But… will you let Papa?”

The question trembled between them-not from a powerful man, but from a father who was afraid he had arrived too late. 2

Kai tilted his head slightly, considering the question with the quiet seriousness only children possess.

“Mama always tells me,” he began softly, “that my Papa will love me once he meets me.”

He paused, then smiled—a pure, unguarded smile that carried no resentment, no doubt.

“And I’ve been excited for that day to come.”

His eyes flickered to Cassie. She was already crying, but she nodded at him gently, encouraging him. Her heart was breaking and healing all at once.

Ashton’s breath hitched.

“Oh… my Kai…” he whispered, the words breaking apart in his throat.

With trembling hands, as though afraid the moment might disappear, he reached out and gently pulled Kai into his arms.

The embrace was hesitant at first-careful. Then it became desperate.

Ashton closed his eyes as he felt the solid warmth of his child against his chest. The small arms wrapped around his neck were

real.

“Oh my God…” he breathed shakily. “I have a son…”

A tear streamed down his cheek and into Kai’s hair, but he did not wipe them away.

For the first time in his life, Ashton allowed himself to simply feel-to let the walls collapse, to let the years of regret and longing dissolve into this single, sacred moment.

He tightened his hold just slightly, afraid to let go.

“My Kai Pierce. My son…”

And in that quiet room, as Cassie watched with trembling lips and tearful eyes, a broken space in their lives slowly began to mend.

Not with grand gestures.

But with a father holding his son for the very first time.

“Please… help Papa become the best father for you, buddy,” Ashton whispered, his voice gentle and fragile, as if he were entrusting his heart to the small boy in his arms.

Kai pulled back slightly so he could see his father’s face. Without hesitation, he nodded, his expression earnest and reassuring.

“Yes, I will, Papa.”

There was no doubt in his tone-only simple acceptance, the kind that children give so freely, without weighing the past.

Ashton nodded again and again, as though trying to hold himself together. Tears continued to stream down his face, but this time they carried relief along with the sorrow.

“I love you so much, my Kai,” he said hoarsely.

With trembling hands, he gently cupped the boy’s cheeks, studying the small face before him-the familiar eyes, the shape of his nose, the faint curve of his lips. It was like looking at a softer, younger reflection of himself… a piece of his life he never knew he was missing.

Kai beamed at him, his eyes shining.

“I love you too, Papa,” he said brightly. Then his smile widened with excitement.

“I prayed on my sixth birthday that I would meet my Papa… and it came true!”

His voice carried pride, as if he had accomplished something wonderful. He suddenly turned his head toward Cassie, his face glowing with happiness.

“Mama! My prayer was answered-just like you said!”

Cassie pressed her trembling lips together as tears fell freely down her cheeks. She nodded at him, her heart overflowing— grateful for the child who chose faith instead of hurt, hope instead of questions.

In that moment, the room was no longer heavy with the weight of the past. It was filled with something softer. Something new.

A beginning.
