Chapter 166

“Don’t you like the gifts Miss Tanya brought you? I can buy you another,” Tanya said with a saccharine smile, trying to coax any sort of reaction from the boy.
simply looked at her, his calm, unreadable gaze fixed on her face. There was no excitement, no curiosity–nothing at all.
Tell Aunt Maricris what you want, Kai,” Maricris chimed in smoothly. She reached out and lightly held the boy by the arm, her tone warm and coaxing.
“We’ll buy it for you.”
Still, Kai did not respond. He merely stared at them, his expression unchanged, as if their presence meant nothing to him.
To have this chance, they had pulled more than a few strings inside the company just to learn the whereabouts of Ashton Pierce’s son. Their patience had finally paid off when a discreet message informed them that the boy had accompanied his father to the building.
They had rushed over immediately.
Luck had clearly favored them. Kai had been playing in the lobby when they arrived, watched only by a nanny and a pair of security guards stationed a short distance away.
Since she was known as Ashton Pierce’s cousin, security allowed Maricris to approach the boy. Still, they did not completely withdraw. The guards remained nearby–close enough to intervene if necessary, yet far enough to give the appearance of privacy.
The boy sat quietly on the couch, a small toy car resting in his hands, his fingers fidgeting on it.
“Don’t just stare. Say something,” Maricris muttered under her breath, her pleasant smile never leaving her face
When Kai did not react, her patience thinned. She discreetly tightened her grip on his arm, her fingers digging into the soft skin just enough to hurt.
Kar’s brows twitched slightly, and his small body stiffened at the sudden pressure. He winced–but he did not make a sound. Not a cry. Not even a protest.
Tanya shifted uncomfortably beside them, her earlier confidence beginning to falter. She leaned closer to Maricris and lowered her voice.
“Is something wrong with him?” she whispered, casting the boy a curious, almost suspicious glance.
“Why isn’t he talking?”
Kar’s eyes flicked briefly toward her, calm and distant, as if he were observing strangers rather than people trying to win his attention. Then his gaze drifted away again, returning to the small car in his hands as though the two women beside him did not exist at all.

“Something seems wrong with his brain,” Tanya whispered again, mockery lacing her voice as she eyed
the boy
he titted her head slightly, studying him as though he were some strange specimen.
“How could Ashton possibly have this child?”
The two women exchanged a look–one filled with thinly veiled disdain.
“Hey, can’t you talk? Maricris asked, her voice still sweet for anyone watching. Beneath that pleasant tone, however, irritation seeped through. She subtly shook the boy’s arm.
Kai finally glanced up at her. But he said nothing. He only looked at her quietly, those pair of eyes steady and unreadable.
“Did someone cut your tongue off?” Tanya snapped, losing patience. Her lips twisted in annoyance.
“Honestly, if it weren’t for his father, I wouldn’t waste a single minute here, Cris.” She rolled her eyes dramatically.
“Why are you not talking?” Maricris hissed, her temper finally slipping. Her fingers tightened around Kai’s small arm, her nails pressing into his skin.
The pressure dug painfully into the soft flesh. Kai grimaced.
His eyes grew watery, tears pooling along his lower lashes–but he still made no sound.
“We brought you toys, and you’re acting ungrateful,” Maricris continued irritably, her grip tightening even
more.
“Do you know we had an important appointment with our nail tech today? But we chose to bring you toys instead.” Her nails bit deeper into his arm.
“Ouch.”
The small sound escaped him before he could stop it.
It was the first word he had spoken.
Maricris’s brows lifted in triumph.
“See? So you can talk.” She shook his arm again, glaring down at him.
“Ouch… you’re hurting me…” Kai whimpered, his voice trembling as tears finally spilled down his cheeks.
Maricris leaned closer, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper.
“Don’t you dare tell anyone,” she threatened
“Or F’ll pull your arm until it falls off”
“We’ll chop your arms away.” Tanya added with a cruel smirk, clearly enjoying the fear flashing across

the child’s face.
Kai’s eyes widened. His small head shook quickly, terror filling his expression.
“What are you doing?”
The sharp voice from behind them cut through the tense moment.
Both women froze.
“Mama!”
The instant Kai saw her, he wrenched his arm free from Maricris’s grip and ran.
Cassie had barely taken two steps forward before the boy collided with her, clutching her waist tightly.
Cassie’s gaze lifted slowly. It first landed on Maricris. Then it shifted to Tanya.
Her eyes narrowed slightly, cold and assessing.
For a moment, the two women simply stared back, too stunned to react–not because Cassidy had appeared, but because of what they had just heard.
