“Come,” she added gently. “Let’s just find a way to help you get comfortable.”
After a brief hesitation, Carmel gave a small med and gestured for Dino to assist their father.
“There’s a waiting area inside said Miss… ahm…”
She stopped mid–sentence, turning back to Cassie with uncertainty.
“We… we don’t even know your name,” she admitted shyly.
Cassie smiled. “I’m Cassie,” she said. “And this is my husband, Ashton.”
“Thank you… Miss Cassie, Sir Ashton,” Carmel said, her voice soft but sincere. The glanced nervously at Ashton before returning her gaze to Cassie.
“We don’t know what would’ve happened to Mama if not for you.”
Eliseo stepped forward, his eyes glistening. “Thank you, Miss Cassie,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.
“You’ve helped us more than we could ever repay.”
Dino nodded, offering a quiet, grateful “Thank you,” accompanied by a timid smile.
Cassie shook her head gently.
“We were there,” she said simply. “We couldn’t just walk away.”
“Come inside,” she added, motioning toward the hallway. “There’s a waiting area for the families–you can rest for a while.”
She led the way. Though hesitant, the three followed, their steps slow, their eyes taking in everything around them with quiet
awe.
But when they entered the waiting area–They stopped.
The space before them was nothing like what they had imagined. It wasn’t the cramped, crowded corner they expected—but a spacious, well–appointed room with plush couches, cool air, and a soft, welcoming ambiance. It felt… unreal.
They lingered by the entrance, unsure, intimidated by the contrast between their worn, dirt–streaked appearance and the pristine surroundings.
“There’s no one else here,” Cassie said gently, noticing their hesitation.
“You can come in.”
They stepped inside slowly.
“We might dirty the seats…” Carmel said under her breath, glancing nervously at the spotless furniture.

Instead of moving toward the couches, the three of them stayed off to the side–standing quietly, as if afraid to take up too much space.
“These are leather,” Cassie said, trying to sound casual as she gave the couch a light pat
“They’re easy to clean. Kids come in here all the time and make a mess- no one really minds.”
She forced a small shrug, though inside, she was carefully measuring every word. She didn’t want to make them teel small but she didn’t know how else to make them feel at ease.

After a moment of hesitation, the three finally sat. Carefully. As if the couches might break under them.
Their backs stayed stiff, their hands resting awkwardly on their laps, bodies tense and unmoving.
Not long after, a staff member entered, carrying a paper bag which he handed to Cassie
“The clothes are here, ma’am.”
“Thank you,” Cassie said, taking it before turning back to them.
“There’s a restroom in that room. You can freshen up… take your time.” She guided them to a nearby door, handing over the bag.
“Thank you, Miss Cassie,” Carmel said softly before they stepped inside.
The door closed. But Cassie remained standing there.
Her chest rose and fell with slow, controlled breaths, as if she were trying to steady something fragile inside her.
Just beyond that door… was her family. The only family she had left.
