“Everything for you, love, Ashton replied, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple.
For a while, silence settled around them–calm, grounding. Until the door opened.
Carmel, Eliseo, and Dino stepped out, now freshly cleaned and dressed in the simple clothes Cassie had requested. They looked more at ease, less guarded. 1
After another round of quiet thanks, they returned to the couches–this time sitting a little more naturally.
Cassie smiled faintly.
She had been careful with the clothes. Nothing extravagant. Nothing that would make them feel out of place. Just something simple… something that allowed them to keep their dignity intact.
“We’ll wait until we know Celia’s condition,” Eliseo said, his voice steadier now
“Then we’ll go back and gather money for the hospital expenses.”
Cassie nodded, then asked carefully,
“If you don’t mind me asking… do you have a way to raise the funds?”
Eliseo exhaled deeply.
“There’s still one piece of land left,” he said.
“The only one we haven’t sold. I can pawn it to Mr. Romero for now.” His gaze dropped slightly.
“He’s been asking me to sell it along with the others… but I couldn’t.” His voice softened.
“It was my sister Daisy’s inheritance. I promised myself I wouldn’t let it go–not until I find her… or at least her grave.” His jaw tightened.
“I want to bring her home… and lay her to rest there.” A heavy sigh escaped him.
“It’s the last thing we have left from our parents. I can’t lose it… not like the others.” He paused, thoughtful.
“Mr. Romero said he would help improve the lives of the people in Sta. Cristina,” he added quietly.
“But still… I can’t let go of that land.”
Cassie’s brows drew together slightly.
“Improve? In what way?”
From everything she had seen… it didn’t feel like improvement at all.
“There’s a company,” Eliseo explained.
୮
“A big one. They’re supposed to help the farmers here. Mr. Romero said he’s the one connecting us to them.”
“Last year, he started buying farmland,” he continued.
“Most of the farmers sold their land to him, believing they’d be prioritized once the company develops everything.”
“We were told we’d be hired as farmers,” he went on.
“They’d build us houses Provide a hospital. Even offer free education for our children.”
Carmel’s expression darkened.
Chapter 228
“But it’s been a year, Papa,” she said, her voice firm.
“No company ever came. She folded her arms tightly.

“Instead, Mr. Romero started using the land himself. The people who sold to him? They’re now working as laborers… for barely anything.” Her jaw clenched. 1/
“They’re worse off than before”
Eliseo sighed, shaking his head slightly.
“He said the company is still processing documents,” he replied.
“That this is only temporary. We just have to be patient.”
“I don’t believe him,” Dino said quietly but firmly.
“We shouldn’t go to him again. We can find someone else to pawn the land.”
“Mr. Romero is easy to talk to,” Eliseo insisted, though his voice lacked its earlier confidence.
Cassie and Ashton exchanged a brief glance, silently taking everything in.
“If you don’t mind,” Ashton said casually, “what company is this?”
Eliseo straightened a little.
