Chapter 235
“Mr. Romero was quick to respond when he heard we needed money for Mama’s medication,” Carmel said, turning to her father beside her, her tone edged with unease.
They had just returned to Sta. Cristina after making sure Celia’s condition was stable. The doctors had made it clear-the surgery would be done in the morning. And they needed money. Fast.
“He’s just trying to help, Carmel,” Eliseo replied, his voice firm with conviction.
Carmel and Dino exchanged a glance, then shook their heads almost at the same time-resigned, tired of repeating the same argument.
They couldn’t entirely blame their father. To Eliseo-and to many in Sta. Cristina-Mr. Romero had become something close to a savior.
“He lends money to farmers in need in exchange for their land, Papa,” Dino said, trying once again to reason with him. His voice remained respectful, but there was a quiet frustration beneath it.
“He’s not the man everyone thinks he is.”
“He’s taking advantage of people,” Carmel added, her brows drawn tight.
“Of all of us.”
Eliseo’s expression hardened.
“Be careful with what you’re saying,” he warned, lowering his voice as his eyes flicked around instinctively.
“If someone hears you and reports it to him, we’ll be the ones who suffer.” He exhaled, his tone softening just slightly.
“He’s helped our family for years. We can’t be ungrateful.”
Silence fell.
Carmel and Dino shared another look-this time heavier, filled with helpless understanding. There was no convincing him. Not
now.
Slowly, their attention shifted to Cassie. She had insisted on bringing them back to Sta. Cristina herself.
Since hearing the name Malakai Group, neither she nor Ashton had taken this lightly. Beneath her calm exterior, something sharper had taken root.
Someone was using her company’s name. Again. And this time… it had reached her own family.
She couldn’t ignore it. She wouldn’t.
“Let’s go,” Eliseo said at last, opening the door.
“We shouldn’t keep Mr. Romero waiting.”
୮
With no other choice, Carmel and Dino followed him out. Eliseo turned back briefly, his expression filled with gratitude.
“Thank you for bringing us back, Miss Cassie… Sir Ashton,” he said sincerely.
“You’ve already helped us more than enough. Without you, we would’ve been completely lost.” His voice softened.
“I will never forget this.”
Cassie gave him a small, gentle smile-but no words came. There was too much she wanted to say… and none of it she could.
“We’ll get going now,” Carmel said, offering a respectful bow.
Chapter 76
“Thank you.. for everything. Please be careful in going back to the city”
Dino followed suit with a quiet rod before stepping away.

Cassie and Ashton remained inside the vehicle, watching as the three of them walked toward the community hall in the distance -where Mr. Romero was already waiting to offer his so-called heip.
Cassie’s chest tightened. She watched Eliseo’s back-the quiet strength in his posture, the weight he carried without complaint.
A man who had endured years of hardship. A man who had no one else to rely on. And because of that… he had placed his trust in the wrong person.
Cassie’s gaze darkened slightly. She couldn’t blame him. Not when desperation made even the illusion of salvation feel real.
While Cassie wrestled with the storm of emotions inside her, Eliseo and his children arrived at the community hall.
But the moment they stepped in-They froze. The place was crowded.
Farmers from all over Sta. Cristina had gathered, their voices low but restless, filling the air with anticipation.
“Eliseo is here,” a voice called from the front.
“We can begin.”
All eyes turned to him. Standing before the crowd was Mr. Romero-composed, confident, as if he had beer, waiting for this
exact moment.
“Good day, Mr. Romero,” Eliseo greeted, his brows furrowing as he took in the scene.
“You were all… waiting for me?”
“Yes,” Mr. Romero replied smoothly.
“We’ve been waiting to discuss the remaining farmland in your possession.”
A ripple moved through the crowd.
“I’ve already explained the situation to everyone before you arrived,” he continued, his tone measured but deliberate.
“The project for Sta. Cristina-led by Malakai Group-cannot move forward because of that land.” He let the words settle
“The company needs it to fully implement the development plan-one that will uplift the lives of every farmer in this town.”
