Chapter 50
“This woman,” she continued smoothly, gesturing toward Cassie without looking at her, “is the daughter of our former maid. When her mother died during childbirth, my parents, out of kindness, took her in and raised her.” She paused deliberately, letting her words settle.
“They treated her generously. As family,” Mirriam added. “I even regarded her as a dear sister. Then she sighed softly, as though burdened by regret.
“But unfortunately,” she went on, finally casting Cassie a look laced with thinly veiled disdain, gratitude and upbringing cannot always overcome one’s nature. Despite our efforts, Cassidy has repeatedly caused trouble for our family. There are certain… limitations that come with a lowly origin.” The insult landed sharp and precise.
Cassie felt it—but she remained still while Zandrie’s jaw tightened visibly.
Their eyes met briefly, and Cassie gave him a subtle shake of her head. A silent plea for restraint. She doubted he would honor it with the way he looked pissed.
“Is that true, Miss Cassidy?” Zandrie asked calmly.
Too calmly.
Cassie stiffened and turned her gaze toward her father.
For a fleeting moment, the past clawed its way back–memories of shrinking into corners, of swallowing truths, of learning that silence was safer than honesty.
Was she going to do it again? Before she could decide, Zandrie spoke once more.
“I place great importance on integrity,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Not only in business–but in how people are treated.”
His eyes swept across the Knowles family.
“What I’ve witnessed today,” he continued coldly, “has shown me a side of Knowles Corporation’s founding legacy I was previously unaware of.”
A heavy silence followed. Terror flickered on their faces as the implication of Zandrie Wallace’s words settled in.
“I understand completely, CEO Wallace,” Red Knowles hurried to say, stepping in with a strained
smile.
“And I truly respect your values. I apologize if this unfortunate incident has disturbed you.”
He bowed his head slightly.
“Please don’t allow this insignificant misunderstanding to affect our mutual understanding.”
Red gestured toward the elevators.

“Shall we proceed to my office to continue our discussion regarding the contract?” Madame Rima and Mirriam nodded immediately, their agreement swift and eager. “I’ll have refreshments arranged,” Rima added pleasantly.
Zandrie did not move.
His gaze lingered on the other man, then shifted to Rima–before finally settling on Mirriam, who had begun fluttering her lashes with subtle intent.
A distraction. One he recognized all too well.
The Knowles family waited, tension etched into every line of their posture. They couldn’t afford to lose him. Not now.
After a long, grueling silence, Zandrie finally spoke.
“I’m afraid we’ll have to reschedule the contract discussion, CEO Knowles.”
Shock rippled through the room.
Everyone froze–except Cassie, whose curiosity stirred despite her confusion.
“There are more important matters I need to attend to,” Zandrie added coolly.
“CEO Wallace-” Red blurted out, panic seeping through his composure.
“Of course,” Red corrected himself hastily, forcing a smile. “Please let us know your most convenient time.”
“My assistant will contact you,” Zandrie replied, his eyes shifting toward Cassie.
Then, without breaking eye contact with Red, he said, “If you’ll excuse us–I’ll be taking my wife to have her face checked.”
The word hit like a thunderclap.
“Wife?” Red echoed hoarsely, disbelief washing over his features.
“Yes,” Zandrie replied, casual, unwavering–as if he were stating a simple fact.
