“How did this even happen?” Mirriam snapped, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor as she paced her father’s office.

“How did that bitch get this lucky?”

Red Knowles didn’t answer immediately.

“CEO Wallace… married to Cassidy?” he finally whispered, the words sounding foreign on his tongue. His gaze was fixed on the floor, unfocused, as if staring hard enough might undo what he had heard.

“This can’t be real,” Rima said faintly, shaking her head in stubborn denial. “It doesn’t make sense. How could this have happened?”

Mirriam stopped pacing and spun around, panic slipping through her fury. She hurried to Red’s side and dropped into the chair beside him, clutching his arm.

“What are we going to do, Dad?” she pressed urgently.

“We need that collaboration. Knowles Corporation won’t survive without Wallace’s backing. And now Cassidy is his wife? This could destroy everything.”

Rima straightened abruptly, her composure cracking as she turned to face her husband.

“I don’t trust her,” she said sharply.

“Cassidy has every reason to sabotage this deal. If she whispers even one word against us–just one- the collaboration is gone. We don’t have six months to recover from that.”

Red’s jaw tightened. He slammed his palm against the desk, the sound echoing through the room.

“Do you think I don’t know that?” he snapped, anger finally erupting.

“I’ve been negotiating with CEO Zandrie Wallace for months. Months. We were this close to getting his approval.” He dragged a hand through his hair, eyes blazing as he glared at the two women. “And then this–this damn marriage–happens.”

The room fell into a heavy silence, the weight of Cassidy’s name hanging between them like a loaded

weapon.

“I need to meet with Cassidy.”

Red suddenly pushed back his chair and stood, the words spilling from his mouth as if he hadn’t meant to say them aloud. He began pacing the length of the office, his strides restless and heavy, his mind clearly racing ahead of the conversation.

The two women watched him in stunned silence.

“We need to apologize to her,” Red continued, stopping abruptly and turning to face his wife and daughter.

“This company is hanging by a thread,” he said grimly. “At a time like this, we cannot afford to offend Cassidy–not even slightly. One word from her to CEO Wallace, and he could cancel the collaboration without so much as a negotiation.”

The implications settled heavily in the room.

Mirriam’s hands curled into fists at her sides, nails biting into her palms as she struggled to contain her rage.

“I can’t believe that bitch has this much power over us now,” she muttered through clenched teeth, her voice trembling with fury and humiliation.

“Just this once,” Red muttered darkly, his voice low and edged with restraint.

“Once CEO Wallace signs the contract, I’ll deal with her.”

Rima exhaled shakily, pressing a hand to her chest as if the very thought pained her.
