Zandrie placed the order, and while they waited for it to arrive, the table settled into polite small talk- harmless remarks, easy laughter, the kind meant to fill space rather than meaning.
They only quieted when their orders arrived.
Mirriam, however, wasted no time.
A subtle nudge followed–her foot pressing against Cassie’s beneath the table, deliberate and impatient.
Cassie smirked inwardly. She took another unhurried spoonful of her dessert, savoring it, before finally setting the teaspoon down with careful grace.
“Drie,” she said sweetly, lifting her eyes to him, “how are your negotiations with Knowles Corporation going?”
Mirriam stilled, her attention sharpening as she waited for his response.
Drie lifted a brow, amused. “I didn’t know you were interested in business, babe.”
“Well,” Cassie replied lightly, pursing her lips as she reached for her spoon again, “Knowles Corporation is my family’s legacy.”
“Business is stressful, Cassie,” Drie said gently, his tone indulgent rather than dismissive.
“I don’t want you involved in things like that.” He leaned back slightly, studying her with a fond smile.
“Are you bored being a wife? Do you need more money for shopping? Or maybe a trip–any country you like–while I wrap up my dealings here in Bay City?”
“I’m not in the mood for any of that,” Cassie said at once. She crossed her arms over her chest and openly sulked. “I want to stay here with you.”
Drie chuckled softly. “Then stay,” he said.
“But don’t trouble yourself with stressful matters. Leave those to me.” He reached for his dessert again.
“Just enjoy being my wife.”
Before Cassie could respond, Mirriam interjected smoothly, a polite smile fixed on her lips.
“My sister knows nothing about business,” she said apologetically, casting a glance at Cassie as though indulging a child.
“She’s never been interested in it.”
Cassie kept her expression mild, her spoon circling slowly in her dessert.
“She doesn’t need to be interested,” Zandrie said calmly, turning his attention back to Cassie.
“But she is an heir of Knowles Corporation, CEO Wallace,” Mirriam replied smoothly. She offered Cassie

a fond, almost reverent smile.
“And keeping the company within the family has always been the utmost dream of every Knowles.”
Cassie remained quiet as Mirriam continued, carefully choosing her words.
“She’s anxious about the future of Knowles Corporation,” Mirriam added, shifting her gaze toward Zandrie with gentle sincerity.
“It’s meant to be an inheritance–for the next generation.” She paused deliberately. “For your future
children.”
The implication hung in the air.
“She has no reason to be anxious,” Zandrie said dismissively.
“No matter what happens, she’s the queen of the Wallace empire.” He shrugged lightly.
“Knowles Corporation is nothing compared to Wallace and Holt Conglomerate.”
The answer clearly wasn’t what Mirriam had expected, she nudged Cassie under the table again.
“But Knowles Corporation is important to me,” Cassie said suddenly. She lifted her head, her voice firm and unmistakably resolute.
“Please sign the contract soon, Drie.”
The table went still. Even Mirriam was not expecting Cassie’s bluntness.
Zandrie paused mid–motion, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly.
“You’re testing my indulgence, Cassidy,” he murmured. His tone remained gracious, but the warning beneath it was sharp enough to be felt by everyone at the table–including Mirriam.
“When did you become this demanding?”
“CEO Wallace,” Mirriam cut in quickly, her voice laced with practiced humility.
“My sister didn’t mean to be audacious. I apologize on her behalf.”
She then turned to Cassie, soft reproach carefully masking her satisfaction.
“Don’t test your husband’s patience, Cassie. He’s been very good to you.”
Mirriam straightened, clearly seizing the moment. “CEO Knowles is a brilliant businessman,” she continued smoothly.
“He understands how these negotiations work. There are procedures to follow. Rushing a deal like this would be critically dangerous.” She shook her head lightly.
“Millions of dollars are involved.”

Zandrie nodded approvingly. “You hear your sister, habe?” he said.
“Such a brilliant point.” His gaze sharpened as it returned to Cassie.
“Please exercise the same patience and understanding as her.”
Cassie lowered her head obediently, nodding as though chastened.
“As I mentioned earlier, CEO Wallace,” Mirriam added, unable to resist one final stroke, “Cassie isn’t inclined toward business. Please be patient with her.”
She cast Cassie a fleeting, triumphant smirk–quick enough to be missed by anyone not looking for it.
“I’m sorry, Drie,” Cassie whispered, her voice trembling just enough to sound sincere.
“It’s fine, babe,” Zandrie said gently. He reached across the table, his thumb brushing along her cheek in a soothing caress.
“Just don’t concern yourself with these things.”
He withdrew his hand and gestured toward her plate.
“Finish your dessert.”
Cassie obeyed, lifting her spoon once more. She ate quietly, shoulders slightly slumped, lashes lowered- every inch the picture of chastened compliance. Yet beneath that carefully crafted meekness, her eyes gleamed with something entirely different.
