Chapter 58
Not sorrow.
Calculation–masked as morose.
“I appreciate your solid foresight in matters like this, Miss Knowles,” Zandrie said, turning fully toward Mirriam, his attention shifting away from Cassie.
Mirriam straightened, seizing the opening without hesitation.
“Well, I’ve been accompanying Dad since my adolescent years,” she said modestly.
“Even back then, I helped with simple office tasks. I’ve always been interested in managing a business.”
She smiled softly, encouraged by the approval in Zandrie’s eyes.
“When I started high school, Dad began training me in decision–making,” she continued.
“He saw my interest–and he was happy to support it.” Pride colored her voice, carefully restrained but unmistakable.
Then she glanced at Cassie, sympathy artfully arranged across her features.
“I did ask Cassie to join me after school to help Dad at the office,” Mirriam added gently.
“But she refused.” She hesitated, as though reluctant to speak ill.
“She was… difficult during high school. Her grades were barely passing–if not failing.

Cassie’s grip tightened briefly around her spoon, but she said nothing.
“While I was filing documents or running errands for Dad,” Mirriam went on, “Cassie preferred being out with her friends. Causing trouble.” She shrugged lightly, releasing a practiced sigh.
“But our parents were indulgent. They just let her be.”
Zandrie turned back to Cassie, his usual warmth noticeably dulled.
“Babe,” he said, shaking his head slowly, “you could have done better.”
Cassie lowered her head further, her silence reading unmistakably as shame.
“If you’d taken your studies seriously,” Zandrie continued, “or trained with your parents and sister, you could be helping me with difficult decisions now.”
He sighed, disappointment heavy in the sound. Cassie remained quiet. She chose not to defend herself.
“I know the collaboration with Knowles Corporation is a very crucial decision, CEO Wallace,” Mirriam said smoothly, stepping neatly into the space Cassie had vacated.
“But if you need someone to listen to your insights–or discuss your foresight–I’m available.” She

smiled, earnest and confident.
“I’ll do my best to assist you.”
Cassie lifted another spoonful of dessert, her movements slow and obedient.
And behind her bowed head, a faint, knowing smile flickered–brief, invisible, and lethal.
“Actually, I have quite a lot of concerns regarding this proposed collaboration,” Zandrie said thoughtfully.
He interlaced his fingers in front of him and leaned back, his expression turning contemplative.
“I’ve already discussed them with the board and my father–CEO Holt–but I’m still not fully appeased.”
Mirriam straightened at once, sensing opportunity.
“I understand how difficult this decision must be for you, CEO Wallace,” she said smoothly, her voice calm and assured.
“Especially since the company has been losing money and clients over the past few years.” She paused deliberately before continuing.
“However, the guaranteed sixty percent stake would give you full control. And since Cassie is your wife, working together wouldn’t be difficult at all.”
She smiled, warm and convincing.
“It could be a family effort to reclaim Knowles Corporation’s former glory and bring it to greater heights.”
Zandrie’s brows lifted slightly. Then he chuckled, shaking his head as if amused by his own oversight.
“You make a strong point,” he admitted.
“Why didn’t I consider that earlier?” He exhaled softly.
“I was too focused on insignificant matters. Though I only recently discovered my wife’s connection to Knowles Corporation, I should have thought of the possibilities you mentioned.” He smiled, clearly
reassured.
“This collaboration can’t go wrong. After all, I’m married to Cassidy.”
He turned toward Mirriam, lowering his voice slightly. “I hope you’ll have time for further discussion,
Miss Knowles.”
“I can free my entire afternoon,” Mirriam replied easily, shrugging as a victorious gleam flashed in her
eyes.
“Excellent,” Zandrie said, clasping his hands together as though a burden had been lifted.
“There are still documents I need to review. Your insight would be very helpful.” He began to rise.
“Let’s return to the office.”
