"Glad we're on the same page," Willa said, dropping her hand and returning to the sofa. "Nolan has absolutely nothing to do with you."
She leaned back languidly against the cushions, letting her gaze drift over him as she patted the empty space beside her. "Why are you standing all the way over there? It's your house, sit wherever you want."
Randal crossed the room and sat down right next to her, unable to resist stealing glances at her profile from the corner of his eye.
Just one look was all it took for the agonizing longing he had suppressed for so long to claw its way back to the surface.
Willa turned to him with careless grace. One brow arched in a deliberate, teasing smirk. "Randal, stop looking like I've been bullying you."
Randal's eyes shot up, crashing straight into her half-smiling gaze. Those eyes were so frosty and aloof, yet with a single, subtle glance, they effortlessly enslaved his soul.
He instantly masked the raw hunger in his eyes, leaning closer with eager desperation, fully accepting her reprimand. "I don't. I know everything that happened today is entirely my own fault."
Willa was satisfied with his submission. Tired of playing games, she stood up, smoothed down the hem of her shirt, and reverted to her icy tone. "I've said what I came to say. I'm leaving."
Randal scrambled to his feet. He was desperate for her to stay but paralyzed by the fear of angering her, so he simply shadowed her to the entryway. Panic overriding his restraint, he finally called out, "Willa..."
Willa stopped in her tracks.
"I heard... Corbin is going abroad for a long time."
Willa turned around and leaned against the front door, utterly failing to grasp what he was getting at.
His gaze flickered away nervously, terrified that his next words would ignite her fury, but entirely powerless to hold them back.
"So... you can do whatever you want with me. He'll never find out."
Willa gave him a flat look before suddenly breaking into a soft, breathy laugh. The emotion in her eyes was impossible to decipher.
"Randal, what exactly do you take yourself for?"
Her words dripped with rejection, but she hadn't slammed the door in his face.
