Chapter 287 She’s Ruining Him

I paced the length of the living room for the third time, my skin itching with frustration. Mark sat on the couch looking like a man who’d aged ten years overnight, but that didn’t stop the irritation bubbling in my chest.

“This is her,” I said, arms crossed. “Everything that’s happening is Amy. Who else would have the guts? Who else knows where to hit you?”

Mark didn’t even lift his head. “Clara, stop.”

I scoffed. “Stop? Your board is turning on you, the pack is whispering, your investors are backing away, and salons are full of women saying you’re a fraud. But you want me to stop?”

His jaw tightened. “You’re nagging.”

“I’m telling you facts.”

“And I’m telling you that you’re making everything worse.” He rubbed his face hard, the way he did when he was seconds from losing it. “I should have known nothing good would come from letting her back into my life. I should have just-”

He stopped mid–sentence, as if admitting that out loud hurt.

I didn’t care. “Mark, she’s ruining you.”

“And how exactly do you know it’s her?” He snapped the words, eyes flashing gold for a second. His wolf was close. “Did you see her doing anything? Did she confess? Or is this you trying to drag her name through the mud again because you can’t stand that she doesn’t care about you?”

That hit harder than I expected.

I folded my arms tighter. “I’m not stupid.”

“Then think.” His voice was cold. “Every time something goes wrong in my life, you’re the first person yelling ‘Amy.‘ You’ve done it for years. Even when nothing pointed to her.”

“That’s because she always finds a way to slip out of things.”

“No,” he said sharply, “that’s because you can’t stand the fact that she doesn’t fight you. She just walks away. And somehow that drives you mad.”

Before I could answer, his phone rang.

Mark didn’t hesitate–he answered immediately, still glaring at me. But his expression changed within seconds. Color drained from his face. His eyes widened. His fingers tightened around the phone as if he might crush it.

“What do you mean suspended?” he asked, voice suddenly hoarse.

My stomach dropped.

“No–hold on. You can’t just—”

He stood up abruptly, pacing, his breath coming fast.

“From both the pack council and the company? Effective immediately? On whose orders?”

I heard muffled talking from the other side, but not enough to make sense of it.

Mark swallowed. Hard. “I… understand.”

He lowered the phone slowly, like his arm weighed too much. When he finally looked at me, he wasn’t angry. He wasn’t irritated.

He was shaken.

“Mark?”

He didn’t answer. His wolf flickered through his eyes again–this time not with rage but pure panic. He sank onto the nearest chair as if his legs gave out.

“Say something,” I demanded, stepping closer.

“They want me gone,” he said quietly. “Out of the company. Out of pack affairs. Until further notice.”

“That’s impossible.”

“It’s the Alpha’s directive,” he whispered. “No one goes against the Alpha. Not in the north. Not anywhere.”

A cold wave went through me. “You’re the heir to your pack. They can’t just erase you.”

“Well, they just did.”

His phone dropped to his lap. He stared ahead, not blinking.

I stepped toward him. “Mark, listen-”

“That’s the thing,” he cut in, voice suddenly sharp. “I’m listening. You’ve been in my ear all day, shouting about Amy, blaming her for everything under the sun.”

“Because it is her!”

“You don’t know that,” he growled.

His wolf pushed forward for a second, rattling the air between us. The hairs on my arms stood up. It wasn’t fear–it was the instinctive reaction of any wolf when another wolf’s authority swelled.

I held my ground. “You’re blind if you don’t see it.”

“You’re obsessed,” he snapped.

I went rigid. “Excuse me?”

“Obsessed with her. Obsessed with competing with her. Obsessed with proving you’re better.” He ran a hand through his hair. “You’re so fixated that you’re dragging me down with you.”

I felt heat rise in my face. “I’m trying to help you.”

“By shouting? By picking fights? By reminding me of every mistake I ever made?” His wolf growled again, deep and warning. “You’re pushing me when I’m already on the edge.”

“I’m the only one being honest with you.”

“Then stop talking!” he barked.

That one hit like a slap.

He took a breath, chest rising and falling too fast. “I can’t deal with you right now. Not when everything is collapsing.”

I clenched my fists. “So now it’s my fault?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

His eyes flickered gold again. His wolf was pacing inside him–irritated, angry, volatile. This wasn’t a normal bad day. This was a man unraveling at the seams.

And I couldn’t pretend I didn’t see it.

“Mark… we’ll fix this,” I said quietly.

“You don’t get it,” he muttered, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “If the Alpha of the north is involved… This is bigger than rumors. Bigger than board meetings. Bigger than whatever you think Amy is doing.”

I froze.

The Alpha of the north.

Daniel.

Everything suddenly clicked–but I pushed the thought away.

This wasn’t the time to feed his panic.

“You need to breathe,” I said, reaching for his shoulder.
