Mrs. Carter called early in the morning. I recognized her number, but the moment I picked up, I knew something was wrong. Her tone wasn’t its usual steady sound. It carried strain.
“Amy,” she said, “I’m on my way back.”
I sat up. “You left two days ago. Is something wrong? You don’t sound like yourself.”
There was a long pause before she answered. “Your mother collapsed. Two days ago. The healers helped her stabilize, but it didn’t look natural.”
My stomach tightened. “Not natural? What does that mean?”
“I’ll explain when I get there,” she said. “I don’t want to speak about it over the phone.”
“Is she stable now?”
“Yes. But the cause wasn’t something… normal.” Her voice dipped again. “Just wait for me. I’ll be home soon.”
She hung up first. I stared at the screen, trying to make sense of the way she sounded. Mrs. Carter was strong and composed. Hearing her like that made everything worse.
Daniel found me standing in the hallway. “What happened?”
“Your mom called.” My voice didn’t sound steady,

to meet her on the road. She shouldn’t travel alone.”
I would have argued on a normal day, but not today. I followed him down to the office floor while he made
the call.
After he sent out the order, he squeezed my hand lightly. It wasn’t dramatic, just reassuring. Then he headed out to check with Cole, and I went to Carter Hollings because Bella asked me to come in early.
When I reached the building, Bella was already waiting near the elevators. Her expression told me she had something important.
“We need to talk,” she said.
We stepped into my office, and she shut the door behind us.
“I looked deeper into Mr. Radden, she said. “The board member who met Elias.”
“What did you find?”
“He bought three small companies over the last few years. All were previously owned by someone linked to Mark.”
I took the file from her. “So he’s been connected to Mark’s circle longer than we thought.”
“Not just that,” she added. “Two of those companies operate in the southern region. Right in the same area where the rogue movement has been strongest.”
“So Elias has been building this for a long time.”
“It looks that way. And there’s one more thing.” Bella lowered her voice. “Every move they’ve made ties back to you or something that involves your family.”
I didn’t respond immediately. It was the same feeling I’d had since Mrs. Carter called–something tightening around the edges of everything.
“Keep digging.” I said. “And watch Radden closely.”
Bella nodded and left with the same determined look she always carried when things got serious.
The rest of the day moved slowly. Every time my phone buzzed, I expected news about my mother, but nothing new came in. I tried to focus on documents, on reports, on the mess Elias created, but my mind kept circling the same thought:
Why her? Why now?
By late evening, I returned to the packhouse. The escort Daniel sent hadn’t reached the territory yet, but they were close. I waited in the main hall.
Daniel came down a few minutes later, keeping his pace calm but
“She should be here soon,” he said.
I nodded. “Good.”
ady.
When the door opened, Mrs. Carter finally walked in. Her scent carried worry. Real worry. She tried to smile when she saw me, but it was weak.
“Amy,” she said, pulling me into a short hug. “You look tired.”
“You don’t look better,” I said softly.
She gave a small nod. “I need to speak with you. Privately.”
Daniel stayed near the entrance but didn’t interrupt. Mrs. Carter led me to the sitting room. She sat down slowly, like someone carrying too much information.
“I didn’t want to tell you this over the phone,” she said. Your mother didn’t just collapse.
I sat across from her. “Then what happened?”
“She was visited. Right before she fell ill. Someone showed up at the safe house and asked about you.”
My chest tightened. “Asked what exactly?”

“Your birth. Your bloodline.” She looked right at me. “Your mother said the visitor kept repeating the same question. He wanted to know who you inherited certain traits from.”
My pulse steadied but in that dangerous, focused way. “Traits related to my wolf?”
“Yes.”
I swallowed. “Who was it?”
Mrs. Carter hesitated. “Before she collapsed, she told me his scent was familiar. She couldn’t place it entirely, but she remembered one thing clearly.”
Daniel stepped into the doorway then. He didn’t speak, but he stayed close enough to hear.
Mrs. Carter lowered her voice. “She said his scent carried the same trace you described when you talked about Elias.”
I froze.
“She said it was him, Amy. Elias visited your mother.”
For a second I couldn’t feel anything. The room didn’t tilt or spin. It just… shifted, like everything I thought we were dealing with suddenly broke open into something else.
Daniel moved closer, his gaze locked on me.
Mrs. Carter continued, “He asked about you. Directly.”
“Why?” I asked quietly.
She shook her head. “I don’t know. But whatever he wants… it’s tied to your bloodline.”
Daniel’s voice came from behind me, firm and controlled.
“He came after her family,” he said. “He came after yours.”
I didn’t look away from Mrs. Carter. “Did he say anything else?”
“No. After the questions, she felt dizzy. Then she collapsed. The healers said the cause wasn’t natural. They think something affected her wolf.”
I closed my eyes for a second and opened them again. Everything connected–Elias targeting the company, the pack, the southern region, the board, Clara, and now my bloodline. He had been circling me longer than I realized.
“He asked about you,” Mrs. Carter repeated. “That’s why I rushed back. Whatever he’s planning… it has something to do with you.”
Daniel stepped fully into the room right then, steady and tense at the same time.
“This changes everything,” he said. “He isn’t just building an attack. He’s narrowing his focus.”
Mrs. Carter nodded. “Exactly.”
