"If Anne really gets out, I have plenty of ways to put her back inside," Chris stated firmly.
Back when Chris first arrived in Valanthea and was ostensibly on Anne's side, she had needed him to have a clean record to infiltrate Donovan's security team. Therefore, she had not let him participate in the actual contract killings. She had hired the hitmen herself.
Chris was the only one who knew the details of those crimes, and he held the evidence. If he needed to use that proof to send Anne back to prison, it would be an easy task.
"Ignore it for now," Donovan said thoughtfully.
Then he remembered the physical history between Chris and Anne. He shot Chris a side-eye. "Just don't go messing around with that woman again and turn on me."
"Women mean nothing to me," Chris scoffed. "I never let women mess up my business. You will always be my number one priority."
Donovan felt his scalp tingle at the phrasing. He had to push Chris' hand off his shoulder.
He seriously suspected that Chris was simply unfamiliar with the nuances of the language. He likely did not know how to properly express loyalty and ended up saying things that sounded far too intimate.
"Enough," Donovan said. His mind was still weighed down by the news Daniel had brought.
Although he acted indifferent on the surface, he felt an unshakable unease deep down. "Let's get back to the topic."
That evening, Giselle noticed that Donovan seemed depressed. He clearly had something on his mind. After she pressed him repeatedly, Donovan finally told her the truth.
Hearing Anne's name again after a year of silence was shocking enough, but hearing it coupled with a diagnosis of schizophrenia left her stunned for a long time.
