To help lighten his load, Donovan used his spare time to teach Chris the basics of biopharmaceuticals.
Chris took the lessons seriously. Whenever he had a free moment, he was burying his nose in technical manuals. If he could not understand the Valanthean texts, he switched to the original Edevanian versions. Sometimes he stayed up until midnight researching data.
Once he really started learning, he realized that this intellectual work was much harder than the shooting, bomb disposal, and combat training he had mastered in the past.
Luckily, Chris was a quick learner. It took him about six months to get up to speed. He was not ready to lead R&D, but he could sort out the basics regarding the ingredients and efficacy of the dazzling array of products in the company.
One afternoon, Donovan and Chris were smoking in the office while discussing a proposal.
The secretary buzzed in on the intercom. "Mr. Kane, Mr. Armstrong is here. He says it is urgent."
Donovan's heart sank at the mention of the name. "Send him in."
"Yes, sir."
Moments later, Chris walked to the door and welcomed the attorney inside.
"Mr. Kane," Daniel Armstrong greeted immediately upon entering.
He did not waste time on pleasantries and looked anxious. "I just got news from the cops. Anne Holt has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. She has been transferred from the detention center to a mental hospital for treatment. There is a chance she will be acquitted."
It was obvious that Tony and Renee had pulled strings to get that medical certificate. Furthermore, this was a public prosecution case, and Donovan was not the plaintiff. If he deliberately cast doubt or pressured the judiciary now, it would inevitably arouse suspicion.
"Leave it for now," Donovan said indifferently. "It doesn't matter if she is locked in a mental hospital as long as she is locked up."
His original goal in setting up the trap was just to make Anne disappear from his world. Whether she was in a detention center, a prison, or a mental hospital made little difference to him.
After Daniel left, Chris noticed the gloom in Donovan's eyes. He reached out and rested his hand on Donovan's shoulder.
He leaned in and spoke in a low voice, "Don't worry. Even if the cops dig deeper into this case, the trail will end with me. It has nothing to do with you."
