Over the next two weeks, Giselle received confirmation from Daniel that Anne was securely confined in a mental hospital for mandatory treatment. The doctors estimated she would remain there for at least two years.
Reasoning that Anne was effectively locked in a cage and unable to cause trouble for the foreseeable future, Giselle finally lowered her guard and shifted her focus back to running her company.
One Monday morning, the calendar marked the date for Emma's vaccinations.
Giselle, accompanied by two caretakers and Hank, took Emma to the hospital. They went to the same high-end private maternity hospital where Giselle had given birth. Whether it was for her own postpartum recovery or Emma's routine checkups, she always utilized this facility and consulted the same team of doctors.
Emma was nestled in her stroller, which was pushed by one of the caretakers, Ellen Flynn. The other caretaker, Penny Delon, carried the diaper bag filled with essentials, while Hank led the way.
As the mother, Giselle did not have to do the heavy lifting. She was dressed to the nines, her makeup exquisite, carrying her Hermès bag. She held the vaccination record and handled the communication with the medical staff, occasionally checking on Emma to make sure she was comfortable.
She was spared the physical toll of childcare, escaping both the sleepless nights and the constant anxiety. Thanks to her naturally resilient constitution, she avoided the weary, haggard look often associated with new mothers. Instead, she appeared as fresh and vibrant as a woman in her early 20s.
Soon, they arrived at the vaccination clinic.
Although they had an appointment with a specific nurse, several other children had arrived at the same time, forcing them into a queue. It looked like a 15-minute wait.
Just as they settled in, Giselle's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen and saw it was one of her assistants from the company.
"Hello? What is it?"
"Ms. Holt, we have a major problem," the male assistant said, his voice frantic. "The warehouse is on fire. We just called the fire department. Can you come to the office right now?"
Hearing the word fire, Giselle felt her stomach drop.
