Chapter 12 You Can Afford to Divorce Me?
She wasn’t pregnant.
Her vomiting was clearly because she was disgusted by him.
Bethan felt a pang of irony.
It was him who didn’t want a child, not her.
“Let me know when you’re available,” she said, then headed for the door without looking back.
Hugh tossed the test kit into the trash can and blocked her at the door. “It’s pouring outside in the middle of the night. Where are you going?”
Bethan stared at him blankly, enunciating each word, “Anywhere, as long as I can divorce you!”
They locked eyes. “You sure?” Hugh asked.
“Damn right I’m sure!” Bethan shot back.
These days had been pure torture for her.
The pain of being betrayed by the man she loved was uriving her crazy.
If she stayed any longer, she felt she’d lose it.
Hugh let out a sarcastic laugh.
Bethan was stunned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Hugh said, “Bethan, do you really think you can afford to divorce me?”
Bethan stood there, stunned.
Hugh shut the front door behind them, then took the suitcase from her and tried to grab her hand to lead her into the living room.
Bethan snapped, yanking her hand away, “Get off me, what did you mean by what you said just now, Hugh?”
“Let’s talk upstairs,” Hugh said, reaching for her hand again.
Bethan shrugged him off. “I don’t wanna stay here!”
“Come on, Bethan. We’re still married,” Hugh reminded her.
That was the last straw. Bethan was on the verge of a breakdown. She pushed Hugh hard and made a dash for the 2/6 door.
But Hugh was quicker. He grabbed her around the waist, hoisted her over his shoulder, and started striding up the stairs.
Bethan struggled all the way, but Hugh carried her right back to the bedroom.
He plopped her down on the bed, breathing a bit heavily from the struggle. “Just calm down for a second. I’ll take a shower,” he said.
Hugh slowly let go of her hand and stepped back, sitting at the foot of the bed.
He looked her in the eye, his tone full of scorn. “With what? How are you gonna pay me back?”
Their eyes locked, and Bethan’s face was full of pain.
She’d married Hugh right after college and agreed to be a stay-at-home wife.
Over the years, Hugh had been supporting her, her parents, and her brother.
Right now, she had no way to pay him back.
Hugh got up and walked over to Bethan.
He leaned one hand on the edge of the dressing table and rested the other on the back of her chair, effectively trapping her in front of him.
Hugh said, “Look, Bethan, if you don’t get it, let me spell it out for you.
“When the Olsen family went bankrupt, I paid off over 970 million dollars in debts for your parents. The property I bought for them and your brother in the city center is worth over 11 million dollars. I’ve been putting 100 thousand dollars into your parents’ bank account every month, and your brother’s private school costs me over one million a month.”
He paused and said, “And that’s not even counting you.”
Bethan felt as if her heart were being tightly squeezed by an invisible hand, making it almost impossible for her to catch her breath.
Summoning up her courage, with a look of utter unwillingness in her eyes, she confronted Hugh, “Hugh, when you married. me and helped the Olsen family back then, you also gained a great reputation. There was no prenuptial agreement between us. You’ve been having an affair, and I’ve been decent enough to choose to leave with nothing. I didn’t even try to split our marital assets. What else do you want from me?”
