She answered without hesitation, making sure Megan could hear.
Hugh’s steady voice carried through the line. “How’s Miranda doing?”
Bethan’s eyes flicked toward Megan, her tone deliberately flat. “She’s stable.”
“Have you eaten? Should I come pick you up?” Hugh
asked.
Bethan brushed him off with a few curt words and hung
She caught the stiffness in Megan’s expression and decided to twist the knife. “I thought you were cleverer than this. Turns out, you’re really just mediocre. Do yourself a favor and focus on raising your child.”
With that, she walked away. The moment Bethan disappeared down the hall, Megan shoved Hudson aside in disgust.

She had worked so hard to polish her image, maxing out credit cards rather than take a single dollar from Hugh. She had leveraged her influencer status to worm her way into every brand and every circle she could reach, clawing her way upward in hopes of forcing her way into the elite.
And now, just when she thought she was close, Bethan had returned.
They were not divorced. She still appeared to be firmly tied to Hugh.
Megan clenched her teeth, venom spilling out in a hiss. “Bitch.”
She had planned and fought for so long. She was no worse than Bethan in any way. Why on earth was Hugh still holding on to her?

That evening, Bethan had only just stepped through the door when Hugh came home right behind her.
He went straight to her. “What happened at the hospital Poday? How did Hudson get hurt?”

At his sharp tone, Bethan set down her phone and stood.
For a few seconds, silence filled the living room as they locked eyes.
Then Bethan recounted everything, her voice calm but cutting. “Yes, Barry lifted him off the ground. And yes, he said he’d smash him. That’s the truth.”
She tilted her chin in defiance. “I know how much you care about that woman and her son. If you’re so desperate to defend them, you don’t have to hold back. Go ahead, hit me. Take out your anger on me.”
Hugh’s expression darkened. “Bethan, I only asked a question. What’s with this attitude?”
Her voice rose. “The first thing you do when you get home is interrogate me. What’s your attitude?”
The air between them crackled with tension.
When Hugh finally spoke again, his voice was softer. “Bethan, we’re husband and wife. We’ve known each other since childhood. Have I ever once laid a hand on 3/7

Bethan let out a cold laugh. “Don’t forget, Hugh. You once broke Barry’s wrist. And you did it for the woman you love.”
Hugh let out a weary sigh. “That was an accident.”
Bethan’s hands clenched tightly at her sides. “Funny how every ‘accident’ always leaves me and my family the ones bleeding.”
His gaze darkened, unreadable. “So this is something you’ll never let go of, isn’t it?”
“I’ll remember it for the rest of my life,” she answered.
Their eyes locked for a long, unbearable moment before Hugh finally turned away and walked out.
When the sound of the front door closing echoed through the house, Bethan’s body gave out, her knees weak.
He had left so quickly, without hesitation. He must have gone straight to her-to that woman and her child. 4/7

He wasn’t a good husband. But she couldn’t deny he was a devoted father.
If Megan had been born into a better family, the three of them might have been picture-perfect.
Bethan showered, turned off every light, and crawled into bed.
A husband who no longer had her heart didn’t deserve her sleepless nights, nor the glow of a lamp left on for him.
A few minutes later, Hugh knocked on Mason’s door upstairs.
Mason raised an eyebrow at the sight of him. “What’s this? Come to confess your sins?” His tone was cutting, dripping with sarcasm.
Hugh shot him a look and stepped inside without a word.
Mason studied him for a long moment before finally crossing the room with visible reluctance. “Well? What did you do this time?”

Hugh met his gaze. “What did she talk to you about last night?”
The question wiped the humor clean off Mason’s face.
His expression went hard, his voice sharp. “What, now you want to control who she even speaks to?”
Hugh rubbed his temple, a shadow of frustration in his tone. “That’s not what I meant.”
