Chapter 132 You Hold Her Leash
In public, she gave him face, never letting outsiders see a crack. At home, she didn’t cry or argue.
The only time her emotions slipped was when her family was involved.
Even then, she either met him head-on, lashed out recklessly, or shut down completely, refusing to speak a single word.
Mason gave a slow, mocking clap. “That’s great then. Communication is overrated anyway. You hold her leash. All you need to do is give the order and she’ll obey.”
Hugh tugged at his collar, the movement restless.
His voice came out low, heavy. “Yes, I forced her back into my life. But my intention was to mend things, not to make us enemies.”
Mason’s expression twisted in disbelief. “You schemed against her like that, and you expect her not to hate you? That would defy all logic.”

The pressure in Hugh’s chest tightened.

He poured himself another drink, downed it in one. shot, and spoke so softly it was almost a whisper. “She’s stubborn. If I hadn’t used force, she never would have come back.”
They had known each other for over twenty years and
had been married for three.
They had once been good and harmonious.
He had never once considered divorce-not before, not
now, not ever.
She had simply misunderstood his relationship with Megan and that child.
And he couldn’t explain it to her.
But once she accepted it-once she let it go-their marriage would return to what it had been. He was sure of it.
All the pain she was enduring now, he would repay her foran time.

The two men sat across from each other, words fading into silence.
They drank separately, their glasses never clinking.
The quiet stretched on until Mason suddenly cut through it. “So you’ll keep protecting Megan and her son. You’re still not planning to explain anything to Bethan?”
Hugh pulled a cigarette from the box, tapping it loose with practiced ease. “I’ve acknowledged Megan’s boy as my own. If I don’t explain, it’s only because I don’t want my grandfather going after them again.”
Mason frowned. “Why does your grandfather hate Megan
so much?”
Hugh’s eyes lowered. “Because she was my first love. The woman I once swore I’d marry. To my grandfather, she’s a roadblock in my life. He’s never tolerated her existence. All he’s ever wanted is to ‘remove’ her.”
Mason shot to his feet, furious. “That doesn’t excuse the way you’ve hurt Bethan!”

“I never wanted to hurt her,” Hugh murmured, gaze lowered. “All I want is a real life with her.”

Mason glared, eyes wide with disbelief. “A real life? You played father to Megan’s son. You broke Bethan’s brother’s wrist for that woman. When Bethan agreed to divorce you, you cornered her entire family, leaving them with no choice but to send her back. And now you expect her to tolerate you keeping a mistress and a child on the side? If I were Bethan, Hugh, I’d slaughter your entire family.”
Hugh’s eyes dropped again, shadows veiling the turmoil inside.
He sat in silence for a long time before finally standing, preparing to leave.
On his way out, Hugh told Mason, “I don’t want her going on like this. And I don’t want her overthinking everything. If you have the time, talk some sense into her.”
Without waiting for a reply, he turned and left.
Mason was so furious he stomped his foot. “Sense? I 16:38

should tell her to slip you slow-acting poison and be done with you!”
When Hugh returned home, the only light in the house was the dim sensor lamp by the entrance. The rest of the place was dark.
His expression darkened further.
She hadn’t waited for him. She hadn’t even left a light on.
He walked into the bedroom and switched on only the faintest strip of light.
Standing by the bed, he gazed down at Bethan’s sleeping face, shadows flickering across his features.
Once upon a time, no matter how late it was, she had always waited up for him.
Even during their worst fights over Megan—when she stopped leaving the light on-she had never actually fallen asleep before he returned.
