Chapter 14 Go Out And Get A Job

Hugh lay down beside her and pulled the quilt up around her. “No,” he said.

His actions were gentle, but his answer was final.

After switching off the bedside lamp, Hugh wrapped his arms around Bethan through the quilt. “Get some rest. I’ll go with you to visit your folks this weekend.”

But sleep eluded Bethan.

She’d always been fooled by his facade.

He seemed so respectful to her parents, but it was all just a game of interests.

Bethan’d thought she could finally get a divorce after days of struggling, but instead, she was trapped.

In his eyes, she was nothing, while Megan and the child were everything.

In the faint light filtering through the curtain, Bethan stared at Hugh’s chiseled features.

Bethan’s mind wandered back to their childhood.

According to their parents, at her “grabbing-the-object” ceremony when she was one, there were all sorts of things in front of her for picking, with a crowd watching. It was said that the item she picked would foretell her future career.

But instead of choosing any of the items, she clung to Hugh’s ring finger.

Fiona told Hugh to kiss Bethan, and he gave her a peck on the lips.

Miranda joked that little Bethy had lost her first kiss.

Then Fiona proposed an arranged childhood engagement, and after some discussion, the two families made it official.

Her love for Hugh had been obvious since they were kids, and his coldness towards her had never changed.

It was almost a miracle that they’d gotten married and endured a loveless marriage for three years.

Bethan stayed awake until dawn.

When Hugh woke up, he saw Bethan lying listlessly beside him, barely moving except for the rise and fall of her breathing.

He looked away, got out of bed, and headed to the bathroom.

Since she didn’t bring up divorce again or cause a scene, it seemed she’d finally seen the light.

As Hugh came out of the dressing room, dressed to the nines, he noticed the wedding photo was gone.

He frowned and asked, “Where’d the wedding photo go?”

Bethan replied, “Threw it out.”
