Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 144

Chapter 144 Swallowing His Pride

He leaned forward. “Think about what Bethan was like before she married you. She was sunshine personified- confident, vibrant, full of life. She loved hard and laughed harder. Look at her now.

“If you actually want to make things right with her, then explain yourself and stay the hell away from Megan and her son. Stop twisting the knife.

“You want a real marriage? Then give her some goddamn respect. Give her what she needs, not what’s convenient for you. Stop bulldozing over her every time you want something.”

When Hugh got home, Mason’s words kept echoing in his head.

The fact that Bethan was staying out late to spite him could only mean one thing-she still loved him. Still cared enough to be hurt by him.

He went to the walk-in closet, opened the coded safe, and took out the imperial green jewelry set.

He lit a cigarette and settled into the sofa to wait for Bethan to come home.

They were married. As her husband, swallowing his pride once in a while wouldn’t kill him.

Near midnight, Bethan came home clutching an armload of stuffed animals, immediately spotting Hugh on the

couch.

Her gaze fell on the black briefcase sitting on the coffee table, but she kept her expression neutral as she walked

over.

Hugh stared at the cartoon plushies in her arms, his brow furrowing despite himself.

Their eyes met briefly.

Bethan set down the stuffed animals and reached for the briefcase handle. But Hugh’s palm slammed down on the case, blocking her.

They locked eyes again. Without a word, Bethan pulled her hand back, stood up, and headed toward the Bedroom.

Behind her, Hugh’s voice cut through the silence, measured and deliberate. “Bethan, I know you’re upset with me. Let’s talk this through like adults.”

She stopped walking but didn’t turn around. “There’s no point. Even if I am upset, I’ll just deal with it anyway.”

Whatever happened between her and Hugh-talking, fighting, anything-never ended well.

Hugh methodically opened the briefcase in front of him. “If we can come to an understanding,” he said, “I’ll return this jewelry to the Olsen family immediately.”

At Hugh’s unexpected offer to return the jewelry, Bethan finally turned around.

She hesitated before approaching Hugh, uncertainty flickering across her face. “What do you want to talk about?”

Hugh took her hand and guided her beside him on the couch. His eyes locked onto hers as he spoke, “About you coming home late these past few days.”

Bethan’s gaze shifted between Hugh’s face and the black briefcase on the coffee table. The pieces clicked into place. –he was using Miranda’s jewelry as leverage, trying to force her compliance through bribery and manipulation.

A slow smile curved Bethan’s lips. Two could play at this

game.

She took a moment to compose herself, then spoke carefully, trying to keep the dismissiveness out of her voice. “I’ll try to come home earlier when I can, so you don’t have to worry.”

Hugh took her hands in his, his tone unreadable. “I told you to stay away from him. It’s for your own good.”

Bethan nodded obediently, though her voice held a note of defiance. “The Cavill family promised they wouldn’t interfere with my work.”

“During work hours, fine. But not in your personal time.”

Bethan looked up, meeting Hugh’s dark, complicated gaze. After a brief hesitation, she offered a concession. “Don’t worry-I never forget I’m your wife. I’ll be mindful of how I conduct myself.”

The tension in Hugh’s face gradually melted away. When he spoke again, his voice had softened involuntarily. “You won’t hang up on me again, will you?”

Bethan moved closer, raising her hand in mock solemnity. “I swear, never again.” Her expression was endearingly innocent, with just a hint of playful charm.

Their eyes met and held. Hugh’s gaze slowly intensified, growing heated with unmistakable intent.

Bethan caught the look immediately. She slipped her hand free and settled onto his lap without a beat. This was a transaction, after all-there had to be an exchange of assets. Hugh had power and money. All she had was her body.
