Chapter 148 Stop Testing Me

When Hugh didn’t move toward the car, Bethan took matters into her own hands, pushing him toward the driver’s side.
“Look, if you two aren’t ready to go public yet, just be careful about photographers,” she said, her voice matter-of-fact. “But don’t worry about me. I remember everything in our prenup. I’m not going to make a scene.”
“Bethan!” The name came out sharper than Hugh intended, his composure cracking.
He couldn’t risk explaining the truth to her-not now- but he also couldn’t stand seeing her like this. Something restless and suffocating churned in his chest, making him feel like he would crawl out of his skin.
Megan watched from the car as Hugh’s gaze stayed glued to Bethan, clearly in no hurry to leave. She cracked open the door. “Hugh, Hudson’s having a total meltdown about getting out to find you. Can you wrap this up?”
Hugh glanced back at Megan, then slowly released Bethan’s hand. He kept his eyes down, avoiding her gaze

entirely. “Get some rest,” he said quietly.
Bethan stood on the sidewalk, silently watching Hugh enter the car and drive away.
The night had gotten cold, and she pulled her coat tighter
around herself.
Behind her, the obnoxious honking of a sports car broke the quiet. She turned to find Arthur leaning over his windshield, hands braced against the glass. “Hey Bethy! Show me around New York-what’s the fun stuff around
here?”
Bethan tossed her pharmacy bag into a nearby trash can and slipped into Arthur’s car.
Half an hour later, they’d claimed a booth near the dance floor at Regal Club.
Bethan slid into the seat across from Arthur, gesturing around the upscale venue. “Tonight’s on me-just
promise you’ll actually stick with the treatment plan after Christmas.”
Athur thumped his chest with a grin. “Hey, you got it6146

That was when Mason appeared, ditching his crew from the VIP section upstairs. His eyes locked onto Bethan first, then shifted to Arthur with obvious irritation. “What the hell are you doing in New-York?”
Bethan just stared. Of course. The elite social circles always overlapped somehow.
“Watch your tone, Mason,” Arthur shot back, annoyed. “Show some respect.” He pushed back from the table. “Gotta take this call.”
Once Arthur stepped away, Mason’s attention turned fully to Bethan. “Where’s Hugh tonight?”
Bethan poured Mason a drink, her voice completely flat. “Off playing happy family-fireworks with his precious. woman and kid.”
Mason watched her eerily calm expression, his cocky smile slowly fading.
“You’re smart enough,” he said quietly. “Can’t you figure
way to destroy him?”

through. He set this whole trap for me personally, and the only way out is if I die.”
But she wouldn’t. Hugh wasn’t worth dying for.
Mason stared at Bethan, completely speechless.
Meanwhile, in downtown New York’s central plaza, Megan stood outside the car with Hudson, tugging at her hand. “Hugh, aren’t you getting out?”
It was Christmas, and she’d finally pulled Hugh away from Bethan. There was no way in hell she was letting him go back today.
Hugh sat in the car, gripping his phone, clearly on edge. He glanced at the festive crowd outside and frowned. “Megan, do you really want my relationship with Hudson out in the open?”
The question hit Megan like a slap. Her face went white.
She quickly scooped up Hudson and climbed back into the car, going on the offensive before Hugh could say 4/6

another word. “How can you even think something so horrible?” Her voice shook with fury.
