Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 204

Chapter 204 You’re Responsible for That Child

“Now everything is a mess. Bethan is devastated by your betrayal, while Megan and her child are left without any standing.”

Hugh shifted uncomfortably and asked, “What are you really getting at, Mom?”

Fiona replied, “Since you’ve already wronged Bethan, don’t keep failing Megan and her son, too. You already have a child with her. Even if the law calls you the one at fault, what you and Megan have is basically a common-law marriage. You’re still responsible for raising that child.”

Hugh’s face soured badly. He twitched his mouth faintly, yet found himself lost for words.

He had known things would end up like this once he admitted Megan’s son as his own. But never had he imagined his mother would approve of him leaving Bethan.

Fiona continued, “Megan’s mother is basically your elder now. She’s fallen ill, and as her daughter’s partner, it’s only proper that you visit her.

“Since you can’t give Bethan the marriage she wants, then 19:38

stand by Megan and her boy. The way you keep wavering, I’m starting to wonder if that child is even yours.”

The moment those words left Fiona’s mouth, Megan’s face changed instantly, while Hugh’s gaze grew darker.

Fiona picked up her purse and stood. “Well, I’ll leave you guys to it. After you finish, send Megan and her son home and spend some time with them. As for Bethan, since you have no children and no major ties with her, just let her go.”

With that, she gave Hugh no chance to reply and walked out of the private dining room. After she left, he sank into a long silence.

Megan watched him out of the corner of her eye and ventured. “Hugh, maybe you should head home to your wife. Hudson and I can grab a cab later.”

Hugh tightened his grip on his glass and asked, “Did you tell Elsie to come find me?”

Panic shot through Megan, yet she denied it right away. “What do you mean? Elsie went to find you?”

Before Hugh could say anything, she snapped, “I’ve had a lot going on at home. Elsie saw me struggling and tried to talk me intg asking you for help, but I refused.

“Maybe she couldn’t stand watching anymore and went behind my back to talk to you. I’ll ask her about it later.”

Hugh grew restless and said flatly, “I’ve got stuff to deal with. You two can grab a cab back later.”

Seeing he was about to leave, Megan grabbed his sleeve and begged, “Hugh, you saw it yourself. Your mom just doubted whether Hudson was really yours.

“Can’t you at least play along for us, just this once? Do you really want to see your grandpa come after me again, the way he did six years ago?”

Hugh couldn’t care less about food, so he said, “Feed the kid first. I’ll wait in the car.”

Megan didn’t dare delay. She hurried Hudson to eat a few bites before quickly taking him to the car.

Hugh then drove them back to the apartment complex. When the car stopped by the curb, Megan twisted her ankle as she got

out.

She cried out in pain and saw Hugh still sitting in the car, unmoving. She quickly pulled Hudson close to her.

Hudson immediately threw a fit, whining, “No, I don’t want to 3/5 walk! I want you to carry me, Mommy.”

Megan crouched by the car, clutching her ankle, and shot Hugh a pleading look. “Hugh, I twisted my ankle. Can you help carry Hudson upstairs?”

Hugh hesitated but got out of the car. He bent down to steady

her, picked up the bag she had dropped, and then lifted Hudson into his arms. “Can you still walk?” he asked.

Megan seized the chance to cling to his arm. “It’s killing me. Can I lean on you?”

Hugh gave a slight nod in reply.

At the same time, across the street, Bethan had just dropped off a colleague and was about to get into her car when she spotted Hugh carrying Hudson, with Megan holding his arm. To her eyes, it looked like a picture-perfect family of three crossing the street.

Hudson, quick as ever, noticed Bethan right away and piped up, “Look, Ms. Olsen is watching us.”

Hugh looked up and found himself meeting Bethan’s stare.

Hugh quickly set Hudson down and started toward Bethan. But she got straight into the car, forcing him to pick up his

pace.
